ALPS is committed to addressing the disproportionate impact of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) on people of color through early detection and team-based care. "There is a pressing need to shed light on this often-ignored problem, especially in people of color," said our founding president, David Armstrong. "PAD can lead to severe complications, such as amputations and increased mortality, if not diagnosed and treated appropriately. Sadly, it is most prevalent among underserved communities. [...] In battling PAD, it's critical that we employ a 'team sport' mentality. The implementation of multidisciplinary teams — comprising vascular surgeons and interventionalists, podiatrists, endocrinologists, wound care specialists, and others — is a proven strategy to mitigate the risks and offer comprehensive care to patients." This #internationalwomensday, the timing struck me: coming off the heels of #blackhistorymonth and into #womenshistorymonth creates an intersection of the doubly underserved: Black women. From my work in women's health and wellness to my time on the board of the White Ribbon Alliance, I learned the sad, repeated truth that Black women's pain has consistently been neglected, ignored, brushed off, and underestimated by the medical community, which, in turn, has created a level of distrust of doctors that can ultimately lead to even more complications. This cycle of mistreatment and mistrust needs to be brought to light so it can be broken once and for all. And it can't be done alone. By bringing together the medical community led by Moorehouse School of Medicine, the advocacy of BLKHLTH, and the consumer reach of Pfizer's Advil brand, the #advilpainequityproject and their #believemypain campaign is one relieving step in the right direction. Today marks both Juneteenth and World Sickle Cell Day. Recognizing these events both individually and together is important for black communities. Juneteenth celebrates the historical steps made towards progress, but also shines a light on the progress still to be made. Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is just one area where progress is critical, as it predominantly affects the very voices we celebrate and elevate on Juneteenth. SCD research and healthcare suffer a lack of funding, recognition, and resources. World Sickle Cell Day raises the awareness needed to increase understanding, uncover alternative therapies, and reduce barriers to adequate care. Advocacy groups drive so much of the awareness needed. I have a special place in my heart for the elderly population. I feel we need to do more to interact engage and LISTEN there is so much to learn! The building blocks of project HEAL is to do just.. HEAL through the trauma and ACTIVE listening. There so much I’ve learned folks since my Fathers diagnosis (he is my HERO) that I sincerely have a new awakening and mission in life to help as many people as can through Advocacy. Creative Forces' Community Engagement Programs are not "non-clinical," as promoted to the public. Non-clinical art would just be art. However, since 2017, Creative Forces has been funding clearly clinical, "healing" community-based programs with symptomatic Veterans -- but without the use of credentialed Creative Arts Therapists -- even in states that license us (or deem this as "the reckless practice of Art Therapy" in law). For the grant year beginning July 1, 2024, Creative Forces just awarded at least 20 of 41 unqualified-to-practice-Art-Therapy grantees $448,358.00 to provide clinical services to: "older Veterans with PTSD issues," "Veterans at various stages of rehab," "Veterans with service dogs," "Posttraumatic Veterans" "traumatized Veterans" REGULATED "Healing through the Arts," (my registered trade name, in my state, DE, which licenses LPATs and LAATs, apparently with the teacher billed as an "expert, trauma-informed" provider), "transformative trauma experiences," "healing" (19 grant recipients) "Healing Arts," "emotional healing," "therapeutic art," "post-traumatic growth," "trauma-informed art." Creative Forces' Federal registration commits to providing qualified Creative Arts Therapists to Veterans and their families. As well, there is no "non-clinical Art Therapy." Why are artists being induced, and funded with public money, to provide clinical, regulated healthcare services to a traumatized population in need of healing? Operation Sham? Not if they require credentialed persons to provide clinical community programming. How can they not, you ask?
