On the 6th of May 2024, I had the beautiful opportunity of attending the launch of the University of the Witwatersrand FinTech Hub. A Hub that will bring about State of the art teaching facilities, enable a space for financial innovation amongst Entrepreneurs, a Hub that also includes a range of Master programs, Short learning programs, Bootcamps, Research and many other activities in the pursuit of shaping the future of Finance. The event had a lot of great speakers including Mr Kuben Naidoo (Former Deputy governor of the South African Reserve Bank). One of the Topics discussed was how FinTech will benefit disadvantaged groups in both South Africa and Africa. One of the benefits already unfolding for FinTech has been how digital payments are now easier even for an Individual running a Business in an Informal Settlement. A key note that was mentioned was the fact that FinTech is rapidly evolving and it's sole purpose is to not only exist as a profitable investment but to also have Social benefits for many. One of the social benefits being Financial innovation for Financial inclusion as the latest Financial Technology will also empower the less privileged. The digital reach of FinTech will continue to bring about unknown and exciting aspects to it! ✍️ Latvia and the Nordic Investment Bank (NIB) have signed a Host Country Agreement to formalize the status of NIB's regional hub in Latvia. 📈 The Host Country Agreement will enhance NIB's presence in the Baltics and increase investments in underserved market segments. This agreement also highlights Latvia's commitment to hosting international financial institutions. 🌍 While the Bank's headquarters will remain in Helsinki, the new agreement will enable NIB to recruit and station workforce in Latvia, providing a straightforward platform for companies to explore investment opportunities with NIB. This cooperation aims to accelerate investments in energy, infrastructure, innovation, security, and resilience and opens new career pathways for both local and international talent. 💼💡 Latvia joined NIB in 2005, along with the other Baltic countries. Company Update #1: Joachim Valot Discusses Partnership and Solutions at the IFC Our CEO had a meeting at the International Finance Corporation (IFC) World Bank branch in charge of the private sector. We delved into our current partnership through the LISPA program, operational challenges, and broader collaboration opportunities in financial literacy and inclusion efforts. 🔹 Current Partnership with IFC: Our partnership with IFC via the LISPA program has been incredibly beneficial. Beyond financial, the expertise and networking opportunities offered by the IFC helped CYTO enhance its project. 🔹 Operational and Regulatory Challenges: Addressing operational and regulatory hurdles is always a priority. We are proactively engaging and investing in technology to streamline processes while ensuring compliance. 🔹 Broader Partnership Opportunities: Financial literacy is key to economic empowerment, we are actively seeking partnerships to develop educational programs in this area. James McEniery and I founded DOSH New Zealand because we believe Kiwis deserve the world’s best solutions to maximise their financial wellbeing. Founding a company is like raising a child - it takes a village to do so. Who in the village provided the most support to DOSH New Zealand? I asked the Linkedin community, poll results below. The community got it right, and wrong. Here is my breakdown of our experience launching Dosh. Most supportive - Other Banks. Not all banks, but a big shout out to Bank of New Zealand, ASB Bank and Kiwibank for opening accounts and putting their trust in us. Each had individuals willing to put in the time and effort to understand our vision and push the case internally (hint: I’ve tagged them below). Thank you. Neither supportive or unsupportive - Government. Unlike Singapore where the idea of DOSH New Zealand was born, in New Zealand we found their is little to no support for the budding fin tech entrepreneur. No founder support, sandboxes, applicable grants. There is much NZ could learn from the Singapore Government’s approach to fin tech. Unsupportive - the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. We learned quickly that the RBNZ has little appetite for competition in the banking industry. To be sure, I read the whole RBNZ strategy paper - no consideration for competition. New competitors are viewed as potential impacts to the holy grail of financial stability. The barriers to keep competition out are strong, and high. $30m of capital high.
