Meet Mohammed Othman, a UNT biochemistry undergrad who was recently accepted to participate in the Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP)! He was initially inspired to pursue medicine after his mother's breast cancer diagnosis, and his dream is to become a surgeon and contribute meaningful research and clinical trials in his future career. "Finding out I was admitted to JAMP as a scholar was both thrilling and a relief," said Mohammed. "I can worry less now about how I will get through my undergraduate studies and get accepted to medical school knowing I won't be alone, as JAMP is right beside me!" Stephen T. Oh, MD, PhD, Co-Chief and Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Hematology, Department of Medicine, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and has been published in Blood. The WashU group of researchers previously identified hyperactivation of NFκB pathway signaling in myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). Tomorrow, the Nobel Committee will announce the 2024 Nobel Prize winner in the Physiology and Medicine category. Who do you think will win this year’s Nobel Prize in the Physiology and Medicine? Like many others, I am predicting that Dr. Carl June from the University of Pennsylvania’s Penn Medicine will be awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his groundbreaking work on CAR T-cell therapy. Dr. June is the inventor of CAR T-cell therapy, a revolutionary cancer treatment that uses a patient’s own immune system to target and destroy cancer cells. His research led to the first FDA approval of CAR T-cell therapy in 2017, and the entire CAR T-cell therapy platform and industry is now based on his groundbreaking work. Another of my speculations is about three scientists—Svetlana Mojsov, Dr. Joel Habener, and Lotte Bjerre Knudsen—for their discovery and development of GLP-1-based drugs, which have revolutionized the treatment of obesity!
