Last Thursday I had the pleasure of being invited to the first Forum on Technology for Sustainability, organized by Trust Valley and the Tech4Regeneration. In the first part of the afternoon I had the honour of conducting a workshop on GreenIT & Sustainable Digital Transition for some of the start-ups that are part of the Tech4Regeneration program. I thank again all the participants for their enthusiasm and interest brought towards my presentation. Raising awareness about the environmental and social impact of digital is the first step toward a more sustainable IT world. In the second part of the day I had the pleasure of being panelist for the roud-table “Innovation and Sustainability : A complex Relationship.” The main theme clearly was technological innovation (and the advent of AI) which is thriving more and more. The great mantra of technological innovation states that technology will enable us to defeat the sustainability problems we are facing. However, it is essential never to forget that even such innovation in its own way has a strong impact on the environment and society around us. It is no longer enough to simply talk about CO2 emissions, we must also begin to analyse other types of impacts and issues, such as the consumption of rare earths - essential to the construction of these devices - and the energy supply associated with the development of AI and datacenters. On the one hand, if well managed, the advent of new technologies may significantly reduce our impact, but on the other hand, a strong risk arises due to the “rebound effect” and inappropriate use of future AI, which may once again trigger great consumption and prevent impact reduction. Sobriety is the new keyword! If we fail to find the right balance between innovation and sustainability, difficult times may lie ahead. #greenIT #numériqueresponsable #sobrieté #innovation
