It's already the end of 2023! I'd like to close out the year with an update on our FOIA request, and share our plans for the new year. First, while the VA continues to not answer us, the OGIS FOIA Ombudsman did, and the response is linked here. Basically, still in progress - but at least we now know that the VA has the appeal and is working on it. We hope to have an answer soon. Second, we spent much of the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas discussing our goals for next year, so without further adieu, here are our strategic initiatives for 2024 (these are made possible in part by a large sponsorship that I hope to announce soon): 1) Investigate and pursue grants as a funding source. 2) Attend and conduct outreach at a minimum of 5 conferences. 3) Strengthen existing partnerships and increase quality offerings to our members. 4) Identify what benefits we can share with and open our doors to the military spouse community. 5) Apply for and become an approved DoD SkillBridge Provider. 6) Improve membership and outcome tracking via implementation of a central identity provider Later posts will contain more details, but I wanted to get this our there, and then get back to enjoying the last day of the year with the family. Stealthy Zardoor Backdoor Targets Saudi Arabia Islamic Charity Organization An undisclosed Islamic non-profit organization in Saudi Arabia has been targeted as part of a stealthy cyber espionage campaign aimed at deploying a previously unknown backdoor called Zardoor. Cisco Talos, which found the activity in May 2023, stated that the campaign has most certainly been ongoing since at least March 2021, and that it has only identified one compromised target so far, though further victims are suspected. Throughout the campaign, the adversary exploited living-off-the-land binaries to distribute backdoors, establish (C2) command-and-control, and sustain persistence, Security researchers emphasized the threat actor's ability to sustain long-term access to target environments while remaining undetected. The hack targeting the Islamic charitable organization involves the exfiltration of data approximately twice a month. The specific initial access vector used to penetrate the entity is still unknown. #cyberawareness #securityawareness

OneBlood, a major non-profit blood donation center serving the southeastern United States, recently suffered a ransomware attack. This incident has severely disrupted their ability to distribute blood to over 300 hospitals As healthcare professionals, we understand the critical importance of timely blood transfusions. This Deepfake scam is important to pay attention too. This scam didn't make it too much in the news, but there's a really important element that's called out. This was a video fraud attempt, with a twist. The video itself was real, only the audio file was distorted. What fraudsters are doing is finding a video, stripping out the audio, cloning it and then uploading manipulated audio to the video file. That means those subtle visual irregularities or glitches... they're not really there aside from lip movement. This video if scanned wouldn't be caught as a Deepfake without checking the audio. Audio should be the vector you're worried about for Deepfake. #deepfake #ciso #cybersecurity
