Day 3/35: "Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow" As you might have guessed from today's title, I watched the play 𝘔𝘢𝘤𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘩, written by William Shakespeare, at the National Theater of Korea today. For me, everything was perfect—the stage, the sound, and the acting. Watching the performance of 𝘔𝘢𝘤𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘩 reminded me of 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 1. 𝗔𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆. Their internal thoughts must be clearly delivered to the audience, who may be seated across three floors. Effective expression is crucial to captivate a large, diverse audience. 2. Being a good actor is not about being conventionally pretty or handsome. 𝗬𝗘𝗧, 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻. Experienced actors exude a unique energy that makes them stand out. Their voice, eyes, and posture have an inherent attractiveness essential for their craft. 3. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁. The journey of an actor often involves a period of obscurity, a time for growth and gaining experience. This period is essential for becoming a seasoned professional. While watching the great actors today, I realized I don't need to rush or expect to improve immediately. While training myself relentlessly, I should enjoy the gradual progress. “Cripping Up” is when a non-disabled actor puts on physical mannerisms to perform a disabled character. It’s not exclusive to non-disabled actors, any actor can put on a physical behavior not related to their own experience. I have a lot of friends ask “but isn’t acting supposed to be pretending to be someone you’re not?” In a vacuum, yes. But the truth is that audiences have an implicit bias toward non-disabled actors cripping up because it gives them a sense of ease. It’s a very easy thing to do to “enhance” your performance, but it’s cheap. I’ve done it myself many times before. I also don’t think that moments like this should shut down conversations. We should be exploring why it is that we feel comfortable with actors doing this. Sure, we could leave it at “not about us without us,” but it’s infinitely more complex and helpful to examine exactly why it is. Everyone wants to play Richard. People are inexplicably attracted to Richard. Accessibility and storytelling should go hand in hand.

What stood out to me (Faustina) mostly at this Daniel Rabourdin week's acting class was a comment about how film acting is not portraying one emotion but rather a blend of several emotions. If a character is going through something exciting, he isn't just experiencing joy. He is also experiencing doubt, elation, and maybe even a touch of fear. These are feelings that screen actors need to be aware of as they decide how they wish to portray different characters depending on what they are currently going through. They can't be 100% one emotion. They need to feel everything that the character goes through and, if we are trying to be realistic, we know that people are never driven by one emotion only. This class is certainly well worth the training it provides for any actor who is aspiring to meet the expectations of audiences that are use to Hollywood performances. If you wish to perform as a Catholic actor to meet these expectations, be sure to express interest in joining this class. I hope to see many of the future Fabiola actors take this class, so if you hope to be a part of the Fabiola project, let us know that you would like to be in this class today!
