Disparate outcomes by race and ethnicity, language, ability, and income (see Figure II) are related to two key challenges that New Mexico’s public education system faces: a shortage of funding for evidence-based programs, curricula, and support services that would provide all students with the opportunities needed to succeed, and a shortage of teachers and other educational support staff like educational assistants, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists.

Basic hearing tests – updated guide This guide describes sensorineural and conductive hearing loss, including their causes, and how to conduct and interpret basic hearing tests. It has been updated by a new editor, Andrew Petty, who is an Emergency Nurse Practitioner for the NHS. It has undergone double-blind peer review. The updated "Basic hearing test" guide illustrates and discusses three basic hearing tests that can be performed to test for hearing loss and determine whether this is due to a sensorineural or conductive problem. The whispered voice test is the simplest technique. The Weber and Rinne tests both involve the use of a 512-Hz tuning fork. It is important to use the results of these tests together to obtain an accurate diagnosis. As part of this update, we have added a description of a false negative Rinne test result. In addition, the guide now includes a table that summarises the combined results of the Weber and Rinne tests. Three competency checklists accompany the guide, one for each of the three tests. These can be used to assist with staff training and assessment. #hearing #nursing #elearning

New email newsletter from The Hechinger Report states the following: Eighty-seven percent of states lack enough speech language pathologists to reach all the infants and toddlers in need. Eighty-two percent suffer from physical therapist shortages. And among the service coordinators who organize critical therapies for America’s youngest children, the turnover rate is a stunning 42 percent, according to information compiled by the IDEA Infant and Toddler Coordinators Association from a survey that had 45 state respondents. (The K-12 teacher turnover rate, by contrast, only reached a mere 10 percent during the pandemic.) Read more at: https://lnkd.in/e5Jv2aDX

Some Tips for families seeking speech therapy sessions! Did you know... ✅ While waiting for speech services, go get a hearing assessment! Why is my therapist just ‘playing’ with my child? 🧩 🫧 Hint: They’re not! Paediatric Therapists including Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists, Physiotherapist, and Developmental Educators all use play as a vessel to drive therapy with children. 🪁 Play is the occupation of the child and it is through this occupation that they learn skills such as communication, team work, turn taking, sharing, accepting win / loss, persistence, empathy, and planning / problem solving skills 🧠 Sometimes we overcomplicate what ‘play’ needs to look like with our children. Here are some tips to help support their development and foster greater development of their social skills: · Get on the floor with your child! · Become immersed in child-led play · Follow their lead and see where their imagination takes you · Build on their ideas (showing them how other’s input can be helpful) · Praise and attend to positive social interactions (e.g. eye contact or sharing) and make a point of naming / validating your own feeling if your child does something inappropriate (e.g. knocks over your tower on purpose). · Model positive behaviours (e.g. sharing / turn taking / facial expressions for emotions) · Use narrative / descriptive language re emotions and moments in play – “oh I see you OPENED the jar” 👏🏻 If you ever want to know more about play-based therapy, our friendly team would be more than happy to discuss this with you! 🩵 #childledplay #occupationaltherapy #paediatricoccupationaltherapy #paediatricoccupationaltherapist #alliedhealth

Promoting language development in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) can be challenging due to the unique environment and medical conditions of the infants. However, there are several strategies that can be implemented to support language development in NICU babies: 🟣Talk and sing to the baby: Engage in frequent verbal interactions with the baby. Talk, sing, and read to the baby, even if they are too young to understand the words. Hearing language stimulates the brain and promotes language development. 🟣Mimic the baby's sounds and facial expressions: Respond to the baby's coos, gurgles, and facial expressions by mimicking them. This encourages turn-taking and helps the baby understand the back-and-forth of communication. 🟣Provide a language-rich environment: Surround the baby with a language-rich environment by playing soft music, nursery rhymes, or audio recordings of stories. This exposure to language can help in language acquisition. 🟣🌟Encourage family involvement: Encourage family members to spend time with the baby and participate in language-promoting activities. This strengthens the bond between the baby and their loved ones and provides additional language input. 🤝Let’s Connect 😁 #followme #nurse #nicu #nursing #nicunurse #healthcare #doctor #leadership #includefamilies #language #languagedevelopment #newborn #speech
