FAA Certificated Mechanic Bias Undermines Workforce Development In November, a member sought ARSA’s feedback on a frustrating turn of events. After 25 years of working for a repair station, the repairman-certificate-holding individual “no longer qualified” to sign approvals for return to service; he was told only a certificated mechanic could do so. This turnabout echoes a long-troublesome sentence in the FAA’s guidance regarding repairman certification. Order 8900.1, Vol. 5, Ch. 5, paragraph 5-1193 D.1. admonishes: “In no instance should anyone issue a Repairman Certificate with an airframe and/or powerplant rating to circumvent the process of obtaining a Mechanic Certificate.” Enforcing that language, and the underlying bias toward one kind of airman over another, circumvents both the plain language of the rules and modern career development logic. 🔎Embracing Challenges: Finding Motivation in Meticulous Inspections 🛩️✨ In the world of aviation, every inspection presents a unique puzzle waiting to be solved. 🧩✈️ For me, the more challenging the inspection, the more motivated I am to dive in and uncover every detail. Today’s task was no exception. I had the privilege of removing the wing of a GA8 Airvan for a thorough visual inspection of all attachment points. A bird strike had left its mark, reminding us of the dynamic forces these aircraft navigate through. As I carefully examined each attachment point, my focus was absolute. It’s amazing how much insight can be gained from close observation. But the process doesn’t stop there – currently, we’re eagerly awaiting the expertise of an NDT specialist to ensure every inch is examined comprehensively. 🔬 Meticulous inspections are the backbone of aviation safety, and I take pride in being part of this intricate process. Could the New ARP4754B Have Prevented This Week’s Boeing 737Max-9 AlaskaAir Mishap? This week a 3-month old Boeing 737MAX-9 aircraft flown by Alaska Airlines lost its emergency door inflight. Luck was smiling this day as miraculously no one was seated in the adjacent two seats and nearby passengers were wearing seatbelts. No one died and emergency procedures were executed to perfection.  But wait: 1.1 million people died in car crashes last year with little fanfare. Our aviation field is DIFFERENT: we analyze each mishap and determine how to improve matters for better safety. Fortunately, the new Aerospace Recommended Practices ARP4754B recently released by SAE will improve aircraft safety for similar incidents in the future. However, ARP4754B will only apply to all-new aircraft and systems and will not be applied retroactively. But the AlaskaAir Boeing 737MAX-9 mishap was apparently mechanical and manufacturing related; both of which are external to the core of ARP4754B which focuses primarily upon aircraft/system electronics (“avionics”). What does ARP4754B bring to the aviation industry for safety? A Guilty-Until-Proven-Innocent approach to the ecosystem of aircraft development. ARP4754B requires a rigidly predefined (for each aircraft and for each electronic system affecting safety) formal process covering all aspects of engineering: Safety Analysis, Requirements, Design, Implementation, Configuration Management, Validation, Verification, Process Assurance, and Certification. ARP4754B also requires the airframer/integrator (e.g. Boeing, Airbus, et al) to coordinate formally with all Suppliers to ensure no gaps affecting safety are present. Alas: ARP4754 and ARP4761 (Aircraft/Systems Safety Assessments) only apply to new aircraft and systems, and are not retroactively applied to existing aircraft. Even newer aircraft such as the Boeing 737MAX-9 were deemed “modifications to prior aircraft (Boeing 737) thus ARP4754A and ARP4761 were not formally applied. However, the rate of production of all new aircraft has never been higher which means eventually all the legacy aircraft flying without today’s modern ARP4754B and ARP4761A safety aspects will be replaced by new aircraft for which these standards are mandatory. FOD – FOREING OBJECT DAMAGE PROTECTING ARRIEL 2D   Foreign object damage (FOD) is any damage to aircraft, personnel or equipment caused by any loose object. These loose objects can be anything, such as broken runway concrete, workshop towels, safety wire, etc. To control FOD, keep ramp and operating areas clean, have a tool control program, and provide convenient receptacles for used hardware, shop towels, and other consumables.   Never leave tools or other items near the inlet of a turbine engine and during removal, cleaning, inspection and installation activities, consider blanking all possible internal access to this engine and this is achieved through the application of blind parts that include, for example, e.g. blind flanges or covers. Safety is a serious thing in aviation industry, thus ensuring the functionality and integrity of aircraft system is essential. With the help of my technicians, here we are checking the firing circuit of cargo fire extinguishers and the priority switching. Plainly speaking, we’re making sure the cargo fire extinguishers will work properly in times when we (hopefully we don’t), need them. P/s: can you spot the other person?

The Paper Work in the aviation industry is crucial! ✈️ Before starting any task on the Aircraft, an AME must have all relevant job tasks on hand. Why is this important? Murphy's Law - when something goes wrong it will definetly go wrong. Documented paperwork post-completion of work is key. It helps in getting answers and making follow-ups, ensuring safety and compliance within an organizational to improve standards. Attention all AMEs! Ensure your paperwork is done after each task completion. This prevents task repetition, improves time management, and enhances duty performance. It was great to enhance my knowledge with an interesting look on Aviation SMS Systematic thinking on the AviAssist Foundation e learning platform. Systematic thinking is understanding how numerous components that merge together or work in conjunction with one another in order to obtain or get a task done .  Systematic thinking help us perceive that  accidents/incidents must be  regarded first and foremost as a failure of the entire system, not a failure of an individual person. . Getting to understand how a blame game or a a witch hunt does not solve the problem but getting a holistic approach towards the error helps find the root cause . As aviators or upcoming aviators , Safety is paramount and we need to understand the limitations of the human mind and machines. It brings about the study of shell by Edwards in 1972 . Software , hardware , environment ,liveware. Getting an insight of how we humans get to interact with one another , engineering designs of the equipment we daily use  and what type of a physical environment surrounds us as we complete the task. We all realise that us working in conjunction with all of this builds about a system and procedures are established in order to ensure a continuous flow of that system . Once a mistake occurs , lets not be quick to point the finger at someone but go back to the drawing board and look at the whole  system  with a holistic approach. #aviassist #Aviationsafety #Safety #focussessions #Safetyinafrica
