Professor Manfred Fink passed away November 16th. He was my #physics advisor when I was an undergraduate at #utaustin and had a profound impact on me. When I was an freshman, I chose physics as a major not because I knew I wanted to discover the mysteries of the universe, but more because I didn't want to be pre-med and be a doctor like my parents wanted. My freshman physics professor suggested I join a research lab to get a better sense of what physics was all about. And he knew of an eccentric professor who welcomed undergraduates into his lab. I spent 3.5 years in Dr. Fink's lab in the basement of RLM. The first project he gave me was to design an electron spectrometer by running simulations on a Cray supercomputer. Honestly, I was a freshman and had no idea what I was doing, but he let me fumble around, learning along the way. I got to work on experiments to measure the rest mass of the neutrino, ways to build intense positron beams, and even tried my hand at theory by seeing if I could derive higher order solutions to the Born approximation (that was a bust). But that was the best thing about Dr. Fink. He allowed me to explore, make mistakes, and learn. And in the end, I really did want to discover the mysteries of the universe. Two lessons I learned from Dr. Fink. 1. He strongly believed in students going off to new places for personal growth. For example, he believed kids should go to college different than their home town. He also advised against undergraduates at UT to stay there for graduate school. 2. He said the best way to choose a school is to write your two choices on small sheets of paper, fold them, and put them in a hat. Pick one and open it up. If your first reaction is huge excitement, then that's your choice. If your first reaction is not that, then the other one is your choice. Thank you Dr. Fink. R.I.P. I’m thrilled to share my latest work on applying Control Theory to dynamic systems, specifically focusing on spin systems. This research aims to prototype a software that demonstrates the potential and implications of Control Theory in managing and optimizing the dynamic behavior of complex quantum systems with more than three spins. Key objectives: 🔹 Investigate improvements in multi-spin systems using Control Theory. 🔹 Develop an educational tool for physics students, particularly those studying quantum physics, to explore and analyze spin systems in a virtual environment. This tool not only conserves physical resources but also provides students with a hands-on learning experience, allowing them to experiment and understand the complexities of spin systems without extensive physical setups.
