🎯 Indian cryptocurrency exchange WazirX has confirmed that it was the target of a security breach that led to the theft of $230 million in cryptocurrency assets. "A cyber attack occurred in one of our [multi-signature] wallets involving a loss of funds exceeding $230 million," the company said in a statement. "This wallet was operated utilizing the services of Liminal's digital asset custody and wallet infrastructure from February 2023." The Mumbai-based company said the attack stemmed from a mismatch between the information that was displayed on Liminal's interface and what was actually signed. It said the payload was replaced to transfer wallet control to an attacker. The FT Innovative Lawyers Report North America was published today (my second round of working on FTIL with RSGI)! The conversations I had with lawyers and business professionals in all sectors of the industry were a fascinating insight into how the legal industry works across the pond.    I was particularly interested in hearing about the intricacies of cybersecurity and the role the lawyers play in helping businesses recover from or mitigate against the potential impact of an attack. Jane Croft writes a wonderful article on the legal response to increasingly common cyber attacks, and I am so grateful to have spoken to the lead lawyers on both cases.   In one example, when I spoke to William Frentzen from Morrison Foerster about the theft (and subsequent return of) crypto funds, I was struck by the importance of human negotiating tactics in the success of the matter, despite the technical complexities of blockchain. Negotiations may take place on the blockchain these days, but they're still exchanges between people. The rise of gen AI has led to some anxiety around the human role in a machine-run world - but stories across the report show how, even at the technological frontier, the emotional intelligence and intuition of a good lawyer is still irreplaceable.
