It's #NationalInternDay and I realized I haven't gotten a single photo with our 2024 College to Corporate IT interns this year! 😲 (Too busy being in the moment of #LifeatVanguard I suppose). In lieu of sharing a photo of the exciting projects, team outings, or the networking engagements the interns have taken part in, I'll share a few things I've learned from the interns this year: 1) You choose your own path and can change it at any time. Talking to interns about changing their major or applying to a different full-time track after the internship, I was reminded that we are continuously learning and that might change the direction we want to go in. If you want something different, do something different! 2) "Be a sponge". I have heard this phrase tossed around a lot this summer, and it made me think about how after years in a certain role or years with a company, we tend to feel like we know a lot and there might not be as much to learn in the space we're in anymore. That couldn't be further from the truth - there is always a new perspective to look through, a new technology to upskill on, or a different way of doing things to try. Never stop learning! 3) Ask the hard questions. In meet and greets with interns I have been asked such thought-provoking questions about my experience. Some have been ones that I had to pause and really think about. And guess what, I LOVED it. We can each take that approach in our day to day, no matter what level we are or where we work. Ask the hard questions, make someone ponder. Just ask! It's time for our kids to get summer jobs! 🌞 Employers big and small are seeking reliable, dedicated young workers, while teens and young adults are eager to earn some cash. Summer jobs offer more than just a paycheck – they’re an incredible opportunity to learn and grow. I’ll never forget my own experience working for a small business owner during high school. Those Friday and Saturday nights, surrounded by his family, left a lasting impact on me. Parents, guide your teens and young adults toward opportunities with caring leaders. Here are tips to help them choose a workplace that values more than just a paycheck: - Ask About Leadership: Encourage them to inquire about the management style. - Consider Family-Owned or Small Businesses: These places often foster a sense of community and care. - Don’t Overlook Larger Businesses: Strong departmental teams at places like Target or local grocers like Lunds & Byerlys can also provide valuable experiences. - Check Reviews and Ask Around: Positive feedback about workplace culture is key. - Observe the Interview Process: A caring leader will show genuine interest in their goals. - Value Beyond the Paycheck: Encourage them to seek jobs with learning opportunities and mentors who invest in their growth. Graduation season and many will tell you to follow your dreams.... But if I can do it over, I would factor in more what I am best at /and have a competitive advantage in my decision. I would also be humbler and have the long game in mind. Per author: "...it’s no wonder that when young people start working, too many feel betrayed—or at least bored—by tasks that don’t inspire or obviously benefit them. They were told they could do anything, and now they’re being told to schedule zoom calls or get three iced lattes....But here’s the truth: While we are all born with personal worth, we have to earn our professional worth. No matter your academic record, the summer internships you’ve held or even your last job, when we step into a new workplace, we start fresh. And when our careers are beginning, that often means doing the menial labor, the unsexy assignments and the mindless tasks we might feel are beneath us. But someone has to do them. Why wouldn’t it be us? On the job, people will only know our worth once they know our work. That takes time, effort and consistency. The process and tools involved in hiring and onboarding will never replace the people. Values are communicated in a number of ways, but the biggest one is how you engage with candidates; how you ask about who they are as much as (or more) what they can do. It's about making it a human endeavor. New positions will always require a degree of learning. That inherently involves trust. Candidates need to know you trust them to learn, to ask questions, to do things independently. And when they do, they are able to bring their full selves. That learning is taxing, so finding ways to identify the nooks and crannies of culture is infinitely helpful. Summer is a big onboarding season. Hopefully for many, it's a big connecting and collaborating season because of that.
