"As this report shows, the Uni Connect programme has delivered benefits to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Students who otherwise wouldn’t have accessed higher education have been supported to do so, with others going on to universities with higher entrance qualifications. As well as the life-changing benefits higher education can bring for individuals, these students will go on to make important contributions to society and the economy." - 🗨️ John Blake on our recent report evaluating the effectiveness of Uni Connect. The matters I lament regarding university governance, are equally lamented by many of my experienced academic colleagues. This brief article makes a number of key points that show what a silly loss of opportunity the recent University Accord was. The Australian Association of University Professors and a separate entity also with broad informed input of academics - Public Universities Australia - made I believe excellent and constructive submissions to the Acciod. The key issues of academic values and standards, and of abusive uninformed and destructive managerialism that these submissions detailed, as well as the recommendations for addressing these, were studiously ignored by the Accord. Until such time that attention is paid to these key matters, and the further points detailed in this excellent article, Australian universities will continue to degrade, even while their managerial masters release glossy brochures and media releases, pretending that all is well and getting better. The victory of spin over substance must be overturned.

How long do international students think is a reasonable time to wait for a decision on their application? How long before they start reconsidering their options if they have not received a decision? Are attitudes changing? Our most recent student survey, Emerging Futures 4, asked more than 10,000 international students for their views on the admissions process (and much more). Consultant in online learning and OER - all sectors - policy, quality, benchmarking, competitor research, due diligence
Useful to know that our agonising about universities in the UK is shared with other countries - New Zealand in particular. This "op ed" piece from a well-known expert in online learning, now with wider university senior management experience and perspective, though focused on New Zealand, is topical for a period when we are on the "cusp of change" (of some sort) in the UK. It may be particularly relevant for Scotland. Key highlights from the author's paper (there are many more) that caught my attention were: 1️⃣ "The employment and economic value of universities is... largely accepted. Less well recognised is the role the university system plays as a social infrastructure, an institution of society in its most encompassing sense... This responsibility is critical. It is too easy to fixate on the qualification system and regulate the system on that basis." 2️⃣ "Implicit in this [future] model is the recognition that the university system for New Zealand must be viable and confident without needing to operate as an export-driven provider of commodity qualifications and immigration opportunities." 3️⃣ "... I think that needing a crisis to enact change speaks to a failure of leadership capability, imagination and confidence. There is a significant difference between responses to Black Swan crises where leadership needs to provide structure, priorities, and build confidence in the resilience of the institution, and to other more routine White Swan crises such as a financial deficit, where arguably leadership and management have failed in the period leading up to the point of a crisis." 4️⃣ "The consequence for those with a New Zealand degree is a financial cost with a payback period of sixteen years. This is nearly double that which exists in Australia. This is an insidious disincentive to gaining further qualifications and drives educated people to leave, further de-skilling our society."
Hopefully many folk in the sector have contributed to the work of the University Advisory Group established by the government to "consider challenges and opportunities for improvement in the university sector, including the role of the Performance Based Research Fund; ways to best achieve equity for all learners; and the role of international education" (https://uag.org.nz). This is my submission. Hopefully others will be made available soon also. This is a submission made personally and may not reflect the position of my employer. https://lnkd.in/g3VPA2Pk
