For the first time since 2020 the IT sector in Ireland expects to make redundant more people than they hire, according to the latest survey by Manpower Group. Many IT organisations have slowed down hiring or have implemented recruitment freezes and are looking for savings. These cost-cutting efforts are in response to a slower than expected growth and in anticipation of an ongoing business stagnation in 2024. Yet, according to the same survey, 90% of businesses in the IT sector have a hard time finding candidates with the know-how and skills they need. Johnson Controls isn’t any different. We have significantly slowed down our hiring activities, in particular in the IT space. Yet, we often struggle finding candidates for our vacant positions. So, how can you use the current downturn to your advantage and be ready once the tide starts turning? ● Analyse your past and current experience, roles and responsibilities. What have you learnt and what skills have you developed? Make a list! ● Analyse the market. What skills are the most sought-after in your industry? What are the trends? What skills would be required to take your career to the next level? ● Sign up for courses and certificates that would equip you with these skills Based on my experience with Johnson Controls and the trends I have observed, the following areas have seen the most significant growth in recent years: cybersecurity, data science, data engineering, data analytics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning/deep learning, and automation. AI would be one of the hottest areas. According to the World Economic Forum 97 million jobs involving AI will be created between 2022 and 2025. I believe this is also the area Johnson Controls will be hiring to continue creating smart buildings integrated with human and environmental ecosystems. If AI is your area of interest, you might want to work on the following technical skills in 2024: programming languages, such as Python, Java, C++, Julia, R, MATLAB or Scala; libraries and frameworks; machine learning algorithms; deep learning and neural networks; data engineering; big data analytics; mathematics, statistics and related concepts; data visualization, and cloud computing. Stay tuned! More to come next month 😉 #WeAreJCI

📊Unlocking Opportunities through Datafication 🚀 _____________ #Datafication? _____________ Datafication is simply transforming everything in our lives into devices or software powered by data. So, in short, Datafication is the modification of human chores and tasks into data-driven technology. From our smartphones, industrial machines, and office applications to AI-powered appliances and everything else, data is here to stay for longer than we can ever remember! So, to keep our data stored correctly and securely and safely, it has become an in-demand specialization in our economy. Datafication leads to a higher need for IT professionals, data scientists, engineers, technicians, managers, and so much more. Even more useful is that anyone with a sound knowledge of technology can do a certification in data-related specializations to find a job in this space. Data jobs are more about skills than big-level qualifications. #Datafication #DataDriven #BusinessInsights #LinkedInNetworking

An unspoken truth echoes within the data centre world: To remain ahead, we must innovate not just in technology but in talent acquisition too. The '2024 State of the Data Center Report' by AFCOM puts this into stark relief, underlining a critical talent shortage, amplified by age disparity and gender imbalance. Yet, the response can't merely be a scramble for surface qualifications. Beyond merely casting nets for the elusive 'perfect' hire, it's imperative to find individuals with the right attitude - those willing to grow, to embrace the dynamic nature of the data centre environment. These individuals may come without the specific skills that come with data centre experience initially, but possess the potential to excel through upskilling. What we're witnessing is a paradigm shift spearheaded by forward-thinking leaders who've recognised the crisis and moved beyond traditional hiring yardsticks. Organisations like QTS Data Centers and STACK Infrastructure are aligning themselves more closely with educational institutions, prioritising adaptability and willingness to learn over a checklist of current certifications. This approach speaks volumes to the industry's adaptability. It's not only about recruiting talent; it's about creating it. Embedding ourselves within educational fabric - crafting curricula, running internships, engaging the youth at a foundational level - we're actively constructing the pipelines needed to quench our sector's thirst for skilled professionals. Moreover, by laying down clear career paths and fostering mentorship, we're not just hiring for today but investing in a workforce that'll propel data centres into a promising and inclusive tomorrow. It's the lure of a well-charted career trajectory that will help retain talent, suggesting that employee growth and organisational loyalty are inextricably linked. In conclusion, as we stand on the brink of mass industry retirements, the answer isn't solely to find replacements but to cultivate the ground for our next generation of data centre maestros. Transforming novices into experts isn't just a necessity; it's an opportunity to diversify, revitalise and strengthen the very core of our industry. #DataCentreTalent #Upskilling #DataCentre #DataCenter
