#newstories This bill seeks to replace the 138-year-old British Era Telegraph Act. On 18th December, the government introduced a Telecommunication bill in the lower house of the parliament. The bill was previously approved by the Union Cabinet in August this year. Before this, Other laws and incremental amendments to the British-era Telegraph Act have enabled previous changes in telecom law over the last 138 years. Hence, A green light to this new introduction of the bill in both houses will replace a 138-year-old Act. A few Key points of the Telecommunication Bill are: - According to reports, the new bill will repeal the Indian Telegraph Act 1885, the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act 1933, and the Telegraph Wires Act 1950. - The Telecommunications Bill, of 2023 was introduced as a financial bill, which means it doesn't have to be approved by the Rajya Sabha, though it can make recommendations. - In the event of a public emergency, including disaster management, the government may temporarily take possession of any telecommunication service or telecommunication network from an authorized entity. - Over-the-top (OTT) players or applications will be excluded from the classification of telecommunication services under the bill. The Universal Service Obligation Fund, which distributes funds to underserved areas that are not yet connected to telecom services, will be renamed "Digital Bharat Nidhi," according to the Bill.
