Do you believe that African nations are lagging behind in adopting AI, despite the fact that the future appears to be intricately linked to this technological evolution? Based on research by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, over 60 countries, including the European Union (EU), have implemented AI strategies that encompass over 600 policy initiatives. While the EU and the United States each boast more than 50 such initiatives, Africa lags behind with relatively few efforts in this regard. The Government AI Readiness Index for 2022 reveals that Africa holds the lowest ranking among all regions, and many African countries fall into the lowest tier of the rankings. Unfortunately, there is a notable absence of comprehensive strategies for innovation and digital transformation, including AI, in most African nations. #ai #Afripixel #Afripixelsolutions

AI integration in Africa must consider the continent's unique context. Africa must evaluate and #localize existing initiatives for successful AI adoption, with a focus on AI that reflects its #cultural, #societal, and #economic actualities. #Africa needs #AI solutions built "from the ground up" to address its specific challenges and avoid one-size-fits-all limitations. A few days ago we released a paper arguing that AI regulation in Africa is premature! Because we lack the pre requisite ecosystem, which would be the substance of the regulation. Instead we argue for greater investments in : Data Sets, Talent, Compute and AI Market ( link to paper in comments) , under AI Market we argue the need for creating awareness of AI and its potential on the continent. We have been fortunate to get some media coverage, and after a feature on @citizentv, a comment from my family affirms that our argument is on point. One of my cousins is basically asking "What is AI?" and the other responds with all possible options... needless to say this Easter I am hosting an AI 101 family gathering... So happy to have moderated this panel with experts who provided evidence on the implementation of the #RAM with: Suraj Juddoo, Mary Kerema,OGW, Taye Girma, PhD, Diana Nyakundi, Essa Mohamedali and Rachel Adams! Kenya is anticipating the future of the country with #AI, and we need a societal debate on its developments to ensure that this technology benefits all equally. Additionally, Tanzania is drafting the national #AI strategy along with conducting the RAM. Eastern African countries are contributing to #AI developments because of more investment in skills and people! We need African development of #AI on African terms— and this is what UNESCO is pushing for. A wealth of information on ethical AI development is already available here in Eastern Africa. The countries now leverage existing tools and resources to make the most for their AI strategies. Let’s learn from these good practices of Eastern Africa!
