AI-powered cameras and sensors can detect and identify species, track animal movements, and monitor populations without disturbing natural behaviors. For instance, Google’s Wildlife Insights, developed in collaboration with WWF and other conservation organizations, uses AI to analyze images from camera traps. The platform can identify 1,300 different species and efficiently process 7 million images from Australia, detecting over 150 species within weeks. 🌳 Environmental monitoring and data collection AI can analyze satellite images to monitor deforestation, land use changes, and detect illegal logging, allowing for real-time responses to environmental threats. AI-equipped drones and sensors can gather data from hard-to-reach areas, providing information on wildlife, forest health, and water quality. In particular, Planet Labs uses AI to analyze satellite imagery, providing data on deforestation, urbanization, and natural disasters. Similarly, Rainforest Connection uses AI and acoustic monitoring to detect illegal logging and poaching, protecting rainforests and wildlife. 🔥 Climate change mitigation and adaptation AI can help in analyzing climate models and environmental data, greenhouse gas emissions, ecological variables and species distributions. This information helps predict future climate scenarios, guiding policy decisions and increasing preparedness. This information helps develop strategies to mitigate climate change impacts and enhance ecosystem resilience. For example, Sipremo uses AI to forecast where and when climate disasters will happen and what kind of disasters they will be in São Paulo, Brazil. 🌾 Sustainable agriculture AI can support sustainable agriculture by analyzing soil data, predicting crop yields, and identifying pest and disease outbreaks, optimizing crop production while reducing pesticide and fertilizer use. Using AI and IoT devices, Microsoft’s FarmBeats provides real-time data on soil health and crop conditions, optimizing water and fertilizer use. By enhancing data collection, preventing poaching, aiding climate change mitigation, and improving resource management, AI can play a major role in preserving our natural heritage.
