“There’s a lot of evidence, experience, and common sense that police should not handle [nonviolent mental health] crises situations and fortunately there are a lot of communities across the country that are taking a different approach.” — Daniela Gilbert, director of Vera’s Redefining Public Safety Initiative #ListenNow: In Indianapolis’ downtown district, a new mental health team is responding to 911 nonviolent mental health calls. The new, clinician-led community response team has responded to nearly 100 calls since it launched this summer. Shifting to civilian-first responders can reduce the disproportionate numbers of people with mental health issues who are incarcerated or killed during law enforcement interactions. To expand the program and other similar initiatives across the country, sustained investment is needed. More police does not mean more public safety. https://lnkd.in/ec8eikxm

Filling in the gaps of mental health care is a big part of what we do here. If you are not familiar with our Polaris Program, Polaris provides wraparound services for individuals who are transitioning out of restrictive environments (such as jails and hospitalizations). The Polaris team supports participants in navigating the Washington County judicial system, behavioral health systems, housing, and connections with community resources upon transitioning back into the community. Peer Specialists partner with participants having co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders to overcome barriers in building supportive relationships and assist with integration back into the community and judicial system. The aim of the program is to promote overall stabilization while navigating the legal system and support individuals as they transition into becoming their own best advocate. Program Manager Lynne Dodson is proud of the work their team is doing to bring options for these participants. The program is so successful that other counties piloting similar programs are reaching out to Lynne and Polaris for information and advice. Here’s what Lynne has to say about the interest of other counties in their program: "This feels extremely gratifying for all the hard work we've done to build the success of the Polaris program and to now be asked to demonstrate how we work to other pilot sites...Feeling pretty proud, humbled, and grateful to be a part of something so big that we're making such a direct impact on people's lives." May is #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth! At the #SufolkCAC, our licensed clinicians provide two evidence-based therapeutic interventions. Child & Family Traumatic Stress Intervention (CFTSI) is a brief treatment for youth ages 7-18 and their caregivers. Its aim is to alleviate child trauma symptoms and improve child/caregiver communication. Problematic Sexual Behavior-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (PSB-CBT) can now be provided to children ages 3-14 who are demonstrating sexual behaviors that may be distressing to themselves or other children. We previously offered this treatment for ages 7-14 only, but we are excited to share that our clinicians are now specially-trained in the preschool-age model accepting referrals for children ages 3-6, allowing us to extend this support to larger population of youth. All of our mental health services are free of charge and do not require insurance. Do the math. In Texas, 246 out of 254 counties are facing a shortage of licensed mental health professionals. While I am excited to see our statewide improvements in telehealth platforms (especially the expansion of TCHATT), realistically there are not enough licensed mental health professionals available to meet the demand. And there won't be anytime soon. At Lucero, we have a plan. We created an innovative and scalable solution to address this mental health crisis. On our digital platform, we offer subclinical 24/7 care for youth ages 8 and up, and we provide PARENTS with the tools and strategies to support their families. If there are not enough therapists, let's build the capacity of caregivers to better support their kids. #MentalHealth #Innovation #Lucero #PopulationHealth (Source: https://lnkd.in/gWEQQKHa)

From 2019-2022 we ran a pilot 8wk creative recovery program working with First Responders: Police, Paramedics, Correctional Services staff, who were psychologically injured at work. The things they bore witness to as part of their job are things most people might never have to face. Things too awful to describe. So often, their story was that it was when they asked for help and said "I'm not ok" and then didn't get that help that they unravelled, tipping into full impacts of PTSD. Many of these people found the way back to themselves through creative practice, which opened a door to experiencing a new version of themselves, accepting imperfection, and exploring self compassion, curiosity + safety through play, joy, delight. Many of these people told us, 3 years later, that it was creativity, & our program, that saved them. Our book isn't just a collection of some light, fun activities. It's a deeply thought out call to action for why the creativity we are born with can help us through very hard times. We also examine social norms around work, stress, & exposure to traumatic material that have been normalised, (hi there capitalism!) and why tending to ourselves simply MUST shift into being a non negotiable part of our lives, not some bonus we can indulge in at some future time. Police and First Responders do an incredibly important job. Our experience is meeting kind, lion-hearted people who were failed by their workplace and the expectation that they be exposed over and over to horrific trauma without support. The institution can cultivate dysfunction, and reward abuse of power, which we also see and acknowledge. There IS a long-standing reality that cops have mistreated and abused people too. The Police don't provide safety for everyone. We share some of their stories in our book, and had the privilege of catching up with them years later. Gardening, music, sound, plants still featuring as vital anchors in their lives, where much had changed, for the better. Principal Consultant | Market and Regulatory Environment Analysis and Strategy/Organizational Change Management and Development
"Law enforcement officers, and they will readily admit, didn't go to school to get this type of training," Reynolds said. "They do an amazing job when they have to. But we're working to reduce the amount of time that those officers are going to have to respond to a behavioral health crisis. She adds that most 911 calls come in response to a mental health crisis." This calls into question designating a separate 988 number for behavioral health crisis response. Instead 911 callers in behavioral health crisis can be routed to behavioral health call centers. Will also solve the geolocation issue that has proven problematic for 988 calls. #988 #911 #behavioralhealthcrisis

Policing comes with its unique set of challenges, often placing officers at a higher risk for mental health disorders. Despite this recognition, mental health promotion within law enforcement remains a neglected area. While mental illnesses among officers are not uncommon, seeking help for these issues remains a significant barrier. To address this, interventions are needed to combat the stigma surrounding mental health in law enforcement and emphasize the importance of seeking support. Proactive measures such as mental health screening, ongoing monitoring, and intervention programs are crucial for promoting the well-being of police officers. Practices like mindfulness and stress management can equip officers with the tools they need to navigate the demands of their profession. Counseling services tailored to address depression and other mental health issues among officers are essential. Additionally, implementing regional mental health policies and peer mentoring programs within police organizations can provide vital support systems. It's important to recognize the influence of police culture in shaping attitudes towards mental health and tailor interventions accordingly. By addressing these challenges head-on and fostering a culture of mental health awareness and support, we can create a safer and more resilient law enforcement community. If you or a fellow officer are struggling with mental health concerns, don't hesitate to reach out for help. Together, we can prioritize mental well-being and create a healthier environment for all. #larimarcounseling #larimarcounselingservices #femalecop #therapistforcops #therapistforpolice #traumacounselor #anxietytherapist #newyorktherapist #nytherapist #officersofcolor #legacies #newyorkmentalhealth#copsofinstagram #lawenforcementofficers #firstresponders #mentalhealthspeaker #upstatenewyork #newyorktherapist
