The Lehigh Valley Humane Society has undergone massive transformations to our leadership, programs, and policies in the last half a decade that have radically re-shaped our organization. We were truly put to the test in 2023, with a staggering 34 percent surge in stray, abandoned, and surrendered animals, amounting to nearly 900 more animals in need compared to the previous year.
In spite of this, we finished the year with an 81 percent live release rate for cats and a 91 percent live release rate for dogs, exceeding the no-kill benchmark of 90 percent. This is a 24 percent increase in our live release rate compared to 2021.
We are frequently asked questions about being no kill, but rarely do we find that the community understands what the term means. To that end, we would like to offer insight on its definition, its implications, and what it takes to become a no kill shelter.
Today, we would like to share a comprehensive look at our 2023 shelter statistics: our animal intakes, outcomes, and live release rate, as well as data on the services provided through our many programs.
