Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Economy and Planning has announced the UpLink Regenerative Blue Economy Challenge winners, recognizing 15 startups for their innovative solutions to protect and restore the oceans. Unveiled at the UN Summit of the Future in New York, the winners were selected from 203 global submissions for their efforts to address marine pollution, promote ecosystem restoration, and develop ocean-based climate solutions. These startups will receive targeted support, networking opportunities, increased visibility, and a share of 300,000 Swiss francs to advance their groundbreaking work further. The challenge, funded by Saudi Arabia and supported by WAVE and Friends of Ocean Action, reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to fostering early-stage startups and advancing sustainability. The top five finalists will present their projects to a high-level panel, with the top three receiving additional funding and entry into the UpLink Accelerator Program. By supporting these innovative ventures, Saudi Arabia plays a crucial role in shaping a regenerative blue economy that benefits local and global ecosystems. 🎉 We’re delighted to share the findings of our new report, compiled in collaboration with the OECD Innovation for Development Facility, which explores how challenge funds and prizes can boost innovation ecosystems and government capabilities in low- and middle-income countries. The report, based on literature reviews, evaluations, and case studies from Rwanda, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and a broader Africa-wide initiative, finds that challenge funds and prizes foster social capital, formalise ecosystem roles, and enhance government innovation capabilities, leading to new rules and collaboration modes. The report also provides six invaluable recommendations: 1️⃣ Align innovation with government priorities 2️⃣ Strengthen government capabilities 3️⃣ Monitor spillover effects 4️⃣ Leverage coordination mechanisms 5️⃣ Assess local innovation maturity 6️⃣ Devote time, effort and funding in social capital. These strategies aim to make challenge funds and prizes effective tools for advancing public sector capabilities and addressing development challenges in low-income countries. The EMERGING Valley 2024 Summit brought together 1,500+ attendees from 50 countries, including delegations from Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, and Tunisia, to redefine Euro-Med-Africa innovation and collaboration. 🌍✨ Key highlights included LAfricaMobile securing a €7M investment, groundbreaking partnerships with Plug and Play, Flat6Labs, and Proparco, and the launch of the Positive Mediterranean Program by Agence Française de Développement. An increasing number of open innovation funding mechanisms in low-income countries - specifically challenge funds and prizes - are meant to enhance local innovation ecosystems + grow the capabilities of governments. However, little systematic research has been undertaken to investigate the patterns in these interventions and their outcomes. So, we at Challenge Works together with OECD - OCDE investigated the effects of challenge funds and prizes on innovation ecosystems in low-income countries, and how they contribute to building dynamic capabilities in the public sector. We synthesised external evaluations and explored four case studies in Africa to arrive at a set of recommendations to embed practices that can better enable challenges funds and prizes to grow innovation ecosystems, support local innovators, and create capabilities in local and national governments. We are pleased to now release our findings in a new joint report, launched today.
