August is Rotary's Membership Month, and our club's in-person and virtual meetings featured two incredibly inspiring speakers. Barry Gordon, representing Rotary District 7610 and our very own Membership Chair, Mary Williams, delivered motivational presentations that energized our club. Barry Gordon, Past-President of the Rotary Club of Fairfax, Va., Inc. introduced us to the exciting new Rotary Impact Club options, highlighting how they expand service opportunities for members and those wishing to learn more. Mary Williams captivated everyone with an engaging and interactive Zoom meeting and chat that sparked curiosity and excitement, showcasing the numerous volunteer avenues and the areas of focus that drive meaningful change both locally and globally. Joining a Rotary Club offers immense value on both personal and community levels: 1. I prioritize attending networking events and educational seminars, joining boards and committees, and volunteering. Also, joining the Leadership Sarasota Alumni Committee and the Leadership Council has helped to strengthen my relationships with old and new connections in the community." What was the most impactful part about the Leadership Sarasota program? - "The most impactful part of the Leadership Sarasota program was getting outside my industry and learning about the other businesses in the area. Each day, Leadership Sarasota provided invaluable information about different organizations in the community that I would not likely connect with if not for the program." What’s the best piece of professional advice you have been given? - "The best professional advice I have received is not to underestimate the power of reflection. We are all busy professionals, and it is often not part of our practice to slow down and reflect on our accomplishments and challenges. Taking the time to reflect has helped me to identify lessons learned and develop applications for future projects."

"Building Your Granddaughter's Club". How's that for the name of a long-term strategic plan? Private clubs are multi-million dollar businesses that, in some cases, are not run that way. Members can make day-to-day operations challenging and yet, with a clear vision, a strategic plan and strong leadership clubs can experience exponential growth. The PIE team had a great time learning from many amazing colleagues who are building and supporting community schools across the nation at the National Community Schools and Family Engagement Conference (CSxFE24). We were honored to spend time with our partners at ACT Now https://lnkd.in/gKnc7HQ9, who have received not one, but TWO Full-Service Community Schools (FSCS) state scaling grants for Illinois. PIE is serving as the external evaluation partner for both grants. The conference opened up with an engaging workshop for FSCS grantees. One key discussion at this session centered around shared leadership. No matter what sector you work in, we found the following reflection question incredibly helpful to consider when building partnerships: What kind of partnership are you looking to create 1) completely shared leadership with equal voice and consensus; 2) advising to get feedback that informs decisions; or 3) solo decision-making? Each type of partnership has its place, and it's important to be transparent at all times.

I’m in the midst of putting together materials for our upcoming retreats and want to share a bit about why the leadership workshop is designed the way it is. We chose the I AM theme because we wanted to give participants an opportunity to re-ground themselves in who they are. As professional women, we spend so much time doing - getting our work done, picking up the slack for other people, sitting in endless zoom calls, networking, figuring out where the glass ceiling is and how to avoid smashing our faces into it, playing caretaking roles at work and outside of work. And that’s compounded with all the things we do for our roles outside of the workplace - running a household, feeding people, managing our bodies and clothing (and worrying about how those things impact our work experiences), and oh yeah fostering relationships with ourselves and significant others when we have a spare moment. It’s a lot! While we run around doing all the things, we often don’t take time to rest and reflect - to understand our own motivations and whether the things we’re doing serve us. The retreats are designed as a one-day pause. Through reflective activities and discussions with other participants you’ll learn: 😮💨 How to ground yourself in who you are, and use your values to make everyday decisions that feel right for you 💪🏼 How to be more confident in leadership discussions and decisions ⚖️ How to notice the messages you are receiving from society about what a woman in leadership is, and be mindful of what you take to heart ➕ How to set values-based intentions that will drive progress at work and home And we’ll integrate it all with movement and good food so we are nourishing both our minds and our bodies. After the retreat, we’ll follow-up with a 1:1 30-minute coaching call to check in on how you’re doing applying what you’ve learned. The retreats are coming up soon!
