The World Trade Organization recovenes this week, and one of the topics on the agenda is curbing harmful fisheries subsidies, building on the monumental agreement that was made last year. We worked with The University of British Columbia to provide a rough estimate as to how harmful subisidies are reducing the ability of the ocean to bury carbon. What's the link?? Fish poo! 🐟 💩 The billions of dollars in taxpayer money that incentivise unsustainably high fish catches are disrupting the carbon cycle in our oceans, effectively acting as a brake on efforts to tackle climate change as well as upsetting the delicate balance of life in the oceans. I'm excited about the Oceans Futures platform (https://lnkd.in/eYzvq7qm) going live! It was the result of an amazing collaboration and it identifies the top global hotspots that are most likely to see conflict and geopolitical tensions over ocean fisheries in 2030 as a result of climate change. This platform was created using findings from different studies, including from my master's project from Duke University Nicholas School of the Environment, "Fish in the Face of Climate Change: A ten-year analysis of fisheries conflicts in the Barents Sea". This region holds significant fish and mineral resources, is highly impacted by climate change, and is the center of several geopolitical and governance disputes, all of which make the region particularly vulnerable to fisheries-related conflict. The 'Farm to Fork' strategy addresses seafood sustainability, focusing on aquaculture guidelines, supporting the algae industry, and integrating climate concerns into the Common Fisheries Policy review. 🦑 The Biodiversity Strategy proposes an ambitious target: 30% marine protected areas in EU waters by 2030, endorsed by Parliament. This commitment underscores a collective effort to preserve our oceans and ensure a sustainable legacy. Today at the 18th Infofish World Tuna Trade Conference in Bangkok, at the first conference session on Blue Transformation I presented for the High Seas Alliance an overview of the BBNJ Agreement and the important consequences of this High Seas Treaty for the Tuna RFMOs and Markets. It will profoundly change the content and the organization of governance of our oceans and will introduce an new, more hybrid concept of sustainable managed tuna. A challenge, as well as an exiting opportunity for updating the sustainability standard in the context of protecting the biodiversity and support policies on climate change and SDGs.

By ending these subsidies, we promote responsible fishing practices, protect marine ecosystems, and secure the livelihoods of coastal communities. This positive shift not only preserves biodiversity but also contributes to global food security, ensuring a healthier and more resilient planet

FFA main messages to COP28 FFA DG Dr Manu Tupou-Roosen participating in side event on fisheries and climate change adaptation emphasised the main messages from the FFA being: 1. The critical importance of fisheries; 2. The need for fisheries to be incorporated in the climate change discussions due to its critical importance to island and coastal communities; 3. The urgent need for the world to keep up with the 1.5 degrees commitment, and 4. The demand for timely access to adequate climate finance.
