What do you do during the seasonal drop in sales? Both of our locations are in tourist towns, we have high summer traffic and crazy low winter sales. We opened Joes on the Beach at the end of September and by mid October we could see that we would need to do something to drive bums in seats. Even if we managed the costs, had we not done something we would not have made it through the winter. Our very first event was lobsterfest ( I know rather predictable but it did the trick) Even better was what this did to our cheque average. So we knew that given what we knew about sales trends in town that we would be ok over Christmas, but e would need to do something in January. What we learned from lobster was that we would need to find a low food cost item to create an event around. What we create was Autobahn, Where Joe’s does a tour of German food + Drink. It was so popular that this year is our 2nd annual event. Low food cost, high traffic resulted in cash flow and happy staff. #localbusiness #lobsterfest #event

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿SCOTSTOBERFEST 🇩🇪 I’ve turned on the news this morning and the first thing the BBC news have reported about Scotland fans drinking the pubs dry in Munich. Undoubtedly, us Scots like a drink…. Drinking Munich DRY though…? Was that a case of poor planning from the pubs, overindulgence by our travelling 200,000 strong Tartan Army? I looked up some stats on Scotland v Germany. 46% of Scottish adults drink at least once a week, lower than 50% across the UK. And there is evidence of an increasing number of adults in the country never or rarely (less often than monthly) drinking: 36% in 2021, up from 32% in 2018. German beer sales were down 4.5% in 2023 compared to the previous year, resuming a long-term trend of the nation famous for Oktoberfest, drinking less. Interestingly, the country that drinks the most beer in the world per capita is the Czech Republic, which consumes 184.1 litres per capita annually… not Germany! Munich bars may just be following their national market trend, but they certainly weren’t prepared for Steve Clark’s Barmy Army. Hail Glorious St. Patrick For A Strong Weekend Across the UK On Trade The UK on trade benefitted from a strong St Patrick’s weekend of sales helped along by the final matches of the Guinness Six Nations tournament. The celebrations for the St Patrick’s Day weekend started on Friday and continued through to the day itself on Sunday the 17th with sales across the 3 days up +3.3% versus the same weekend in 2023. In addition to this, the weekend was +11% up versus every other weekend in 2024 thus far, which was a real result for the hospitality industry that has struggled to see any real momentum as yet this year. The weekend drove a total of 27m pints of draught beer and cider with c.4.5m pints of stout consumed across the 3 days. Overall, the trade saw strong growth in Ale, Cider, Stout and World Lager as consumers celebrated the ‘craic’ with friends and family. The average pub served 1,077 pints of Draught Beer & Cider over the course of the weekend, equating to a £3,301 income generator. This was an extra +106 pints sold per pub versus an average weekend this year. Last year, St Patrick’s Day fell on the Friday and became one of the biggest sales days of the year - this year we saw Saturday driving the highest sales as many outlets capitalised on both the Super Saturday of the Six Nations finale along with many St Patrick’s Day events. England had the thirstiest fans drinking an extra 126 pints, with Scotland a steady second drinking an extra 96 pints but Wales fans had clearly given up on the tournament and drank 72 pints less than average. Overall footfall to pubs grew in line with volume with the weekend +2.9% vs. 2023 driven by strong increases on Saturday & Sunday. Saturday saw growth in City Centres and Suburbia as groups gathered for St Patrick’s Day and the Rugby, whilst Sunday was all about Rural & Suburban areas. People stayed even longer with the average consumer dwell time growing at a total level to 135 mins vs. 131 mins in the same week last year (+3.1%). City Centres and Suburbia benefitted the most, as all locations grew consumer visit length over the weekend. Oxford Partnership’s CEO, Alison Jordan, commented: “The weekend’s sales were a great result for the On Trade and exactly what the hospitality sector needed – here’s hoping the Easter weekend will continue this trajectory and show equally strong results.” Read More:

In the last weeks we have seen a couple of news that are related to the core of the Fair Trade movement. One of the fathers of the Fair Trade movement, Frans van der Hoff, passed away on 13th February 2024 at the age of 84 in Oaxaca, Mexico, where the origins of Fair Trade started. His work in Oaxaca with coffee producers and with Nico Roozen during the mid 80s, was the origin of the Fair Trade in the trade relationships between the Global North and the Global South, and years later it became the origin of the Max Havelaar certification, the first Fair Trade Label. To remember his work, I am sharing a video that explains the work of the first cooperative (UCIRI) that started the Fair Trade movement, with Frans van der Hoff as one of the key people in this work: The roots of the Fair Trade: https://lnkd.in/esUcZxRf And just one day before Frans van der Hoff passed away, The Body Shop filed an intention to appoint administrators. As we know, The Body Shop was one of the first businesses in the Global North with Fair Trade as a core value, working with communities in the Global South. With Anita Roddick as the founder of The Body Shop in 1976, she started this work well before the Fair Trade labels we know today. There are many producers that are at risks of losing their income due to the outcome of The Body Shop administration. I hope that those people in Peru and Nicaragua and all of those suppliers of The Body Shop in the Global South negatively impacted can get new customers and can be resilient during these difficult times. When the organiser of tyre industry trade fair The Tire Cologne published the exhibitor list for this June’s event last week, we noted several high-profile absences. It appears we were too quick to the draw, as the exhibitor list has grown since first going public. While the list contained the names of 245 exhibitors on the day it was first went online, it grew to 273 exhibitors the next day, and as of Monday morning (25 March) stands at 288 exhibitor names. Members of The Tire Cologne team at organiser Koelnmesse told our sister publication Reifenpresse.de they’re working on the assumption that 300 exhibiting companies will have signed up by the time the tyre industry trade show starts on 4 June. One of the names joining the list in the past couple of days belongs to a company we’d already marked off as absent. The Michelin Group will exhibit at The Tire Cologne via its Euromaster distribution network. Announcing the upcoming engagement, Euromaster says it looks forward to presenting the European workshop chain’s “extensive and flexible” franchise concept in face-to-face meetings.
