8 hours work, 8 hours recreation, 8 hours rest. Today, although there are many versions of this formula, we in the West generally take it for granted. The historical truth is that the right to have a life beyond the workplace was something people had to fight and die to achieve. Today, Labour Day, we honour and celebrate those who saw the injustice of working conditions not only they were experiencing but their fellow citizens too. They stood up to management and created unions by banding together, literally putting themselves at risk to achieve what is now law. We owe them our gratitude. Did you know most of the world celebrates Labour Day on or near May 1 as International Workers Day or on another date? In celebrating it in September, we in Canada and the US are in the minority. While we enjoy the comforts of our daily lives, let's not forget the struggles and hardships faced by those who build our homes, harvest our food, and keep our industries running. 🌟 The labour community faces numerous challenges, including: ❌ - Low wage rates: Despite their tireless efforts, many labourers are paid meager wages, making it difficult for them to support their families. - Long duty hours: Labourers often work extended hours, sacrificing their personal time and well-being for the benefit of others. - Unsafety at workplaces: Hazardous working conditions put labourers' lives at risk, leaving them vulnerable to injuries and illnesses. "1 May Originally born from the protracted struggle for workers’ rights and social justice of the late 1800s, Workers’ Day has been an international holiday in many countries since 1891. In South Africa, a country with its own long and sordid history of labour and social conflicts. Workers’ Day has been officially recognised and observed since the first democratic elections in 1994. The holiday serves both as a celebration of workers’ rights and as a reminder of the critical role that trade unions, the Communist Party and other labour organisations played in the fight against Apartheid. Workers’ Day in South Africa holds its own cultural significance, as the public holiday has come to signify not only the sacrifices made on the long road toward fair employment standards but also the bitter battle against Apartheid in which trade and labour unions played a key role. Because South Africa’s working classes were those most oppressed by Apartheid, the struggle for better working conditions and the struggle to overthrow systemic segregation became closely linked. You might wonder why Canada and the United States celebrate Labour Day in September instead of joining the international community on May 1st, also known as May Day. The choice of September was largely influenced by business and political leaders, particularly in the United States, where they sought to distance the celebration from May Day’s associations with more radical elements of the labour movement. The establishment of Labour Day in September also reflects a broader strategy by those in power to promote a version of labour recognition that was less confrontational. By shifting the focus away from May Day, which was a day of international solidarity among workers, they aimed to create a more domesticated celebration that emphasized cooperation between labour and management rather than international class struggle. This does not diminish the significance of Labour Day, but it does remind us that the fight for workers’ rights has always involved navigating the interests of those in power. As we reflect on the history of Labour Day, it’s important to recognize the ongoing need for solidarity and vigilance in the face of attempts to dilute the power of the labour movement.
