Real life case study: A lot been in the press about the financial state of the women’s game over previous weeks. The reality is this. First and foremost people forget that from a career perspective for these female players there are not enough clubs and thus contracts available. It’s not like the men’s game where there are 100s of clubs paying full time justifiable money. So if you’re going to grow the game truly you need more clubs in tiers below WSL paying the money necessary for players to commit full time. As someone that’s speaking to many women’s clubs, for me it’s pretty straightforward how the women’s game currently stands - you are either attached to a big club that in all honesty a few hundred thousand to the women’s side is a drop in the ocean so you can have a go, or, you have ambitious progressive owners that see the short and long term value in operating a competitive women’s side. Those teams that fall outside of this are struggling to pay the money that these female players need to justify leaving jobs, leaving homes and travelling hundreds of miles for training sessions - this is money to make ends meet by the way. As a result my worry is outside of the WSL it could get very stail. More needs to be done by The FA and NewCo to ensure clubs can’t just play it as they see it. These players don’t know whether they are coming or going in all honesty. As someone who has predominantly worked in male recruitment I have to say, the Lionesses Euros win got us all talking the female market but having seen it first hand behind the scenes there is a hell of a long way to go. Laura Mitchell had many clubs interested in her this summer but ultimately it was Real Bedford that she chose, interestingly the one that was positioned the lowest out of all of her options. A club that has incredibly ambitious ownership appointing an experienced and sort after coach and is paying a good level of expenses to cover the commitment these girls will be putting in. They will be losing a lot of money put it that way. What this particular signing taught me is if the women’s game in England is truly going to progress then more focus and support is needed under the WSL. Otherwise we will just have one league where a lot of the players are coming into from overseas anyway and this simply isn’t enough opportunity for English talent. As a player like Laura, you may need to take what would seem on paper one step back to take two steps forwards. I am sure Laura will have an eventful and successful season and who knows, within 2 seasons be ahead of where she finished this one within the right supportive women’s football environement. #womensfootball
