🚨 L.A. is making history on Skid Row! Over the past year, nearly 1,000 people who once called the streets home have moved into permanent housing, thanks to the $280-million Skid Row Action Plan. - This initiative isn’t just about finding a roof—it's about restoring dignity and hope. With nearly 2,000 more placed in shelters, the program is on track to permanently house 2,500 people within three years. This is a powerful example of how focused efforts can change lives and transform our communities. I read in Bridge Magazine online today that northern Michigan saw an increase in population in 2023 for the first time in years. While the growth was not significant, growth is growth. 🙂 Did you know that owners of many of the homes on lake shores above Gaylord are in fact second homes for people that made their wealth in lower Michigan, specifically SE Michigan and Grand Rapids. As the middle class continues to shrink, the ability to have a "get-away" cottage up north is declining or out of reach. I find it interesting that many people who made their wealth in SE Michigan invest only in nonprofit land trusts near their summer homes up north, but don't see the need to protect more at-risk sensitive ecosystems in SE Michigan. Protected land in SE Michigan is more accessible to those who have no option of even a weeks cottage rental cost on a Great Lake or inland lake. Shouldn't the workers who live in SE Michigan who have made it possible for someone to own a second house up north also enjoy nature? For truly equitable access to nature, and for everyone to have the ability to enjoy the healing properties associated with a walk in the woods, or a visit to a clean lake, more people and foundations should consider supporting nonprofits protecting sensitive ecosystems, lakes, and forests in SE Michigan. I often write about community 👨👩👧👦 Community is more than people in a geography. It could be those who share common interests, idea, bonds. Community is people. And community is voluntary -- you may fit the criteria... but your participation is optional. The strength of a community can be magnified when stressed. Much like a workout 🏋️♀️stresses the body, but can make one stronger. Recent storms hit the Houston area. After a week, some are still without power. Some have home damage. In Jersey Village -- and I'm sure in other places -- our community got stronger when put to this challenge. Neighbors checked on and helped neighbors. We shared generators. We offered charging stations. Those with power offered our homes & space to friends & fam without. We provided freezer space for those in need. We tried to keep life normal for each other's kids who were out of school for several days. We visited local restaurants who missed a day (and lost perishables) due to power issues. We picked-up yards, helping move downed trees & branches so they could be picked-up. We communicated: face to face, through facebook, and with the local government. We recognized our limitations, but showed appreciation for the level of effort. When at our most helpless -- and when power is out of your control, you ARE helpless -- people became most helpful. That is community. That is community getting stronger.

For this Community Clean-Up our volunteers will meet up at, and clean the neighborhood around Mesa Verde Community Center located at 7900 Marquette NE Albuquerque NM 87108 NO OPEN-TOED SHOES Cleaning up loose trash is one of the best ways to pitch in for your community and the environment. Volunteering as a means to help conserve and protect the environment has a lot of upsides. Of course, the first is that you’ll be taking care of our planet, and it badly needs a little love given the myriad ways in which we’ve become adept at destroying it. But beyond that, volunteering for a cause you care about is a great way to meet like-minded people, make friends, and pull yourself out of the blues that sometimes accompany caring a lot about something important – especially if you feel alone in your endeavors. None of us like the sight of litter. Litter spoils the look of where we live but that’s not the only reason for picking up litter. There are a number of benefits from picking up litter that you may not have considered before. Volunteer-led projects such as these are one of the quickest, simplest, and least expensive ways to inspire more community spirit and civic action. Reflecting on the journey of Cash for Trash fills me with pride and inspiration. During my tenure in the Mayor's Office, I had the privilege of contributing to launching and developing a program that has significantly impacted our community. The case study featured in the World Cities Magazine highlights the program's success in improving sanitation at homeless encampments and enhancing overall community cleanliness. In just ten months since its launch, 294 unsheltered residents actively participated, removing over 243 tons of trash from 22 locations. The program's success led to the allocation of additional funds by former Mayor Liccardo in March 2021. This decision facilitated the expansion of Cash for Trash to serve 500 unsheltered residents, with plans for creating further incentives to encourage the housing insecure to access government services. Today, Cash for Trash continues to thrive under its current management, exemplifying the efficacy of well-designed, community-driven initiatives. This success is a testament to the impact that strategic programs can have on social issues. Beyond the physical cleanup, our collective efforts have restored dignity, fostered hope, and initiated positive change within our community. My gratitude extends to the collaborative efforts of all involved in this transformative initiative. As we observe the sustained impact of Cash for Trash, let us remain committed to pioneering sustainable solutions that address the complex challenges faced by our community. Huge Thank You to our amazing Who I Am Foundation #volunteers in #Albuquerque who came out to Saturday morning's Community Clean-Up project! Our volunteers picked up over 4 BAGS of trash at Tingley Beach, in a little over 2 hours! Showcasing the impact you can make in the community by simply volunteering 1-2 hours a week. These Community Clean-Up projects are conducted each month, and our team will rotate around to different parts of Santa Fe, to clean up streets, neighborhoods, and parks. Volunteer-led projects such as these are one of the quickest, simplest, and least expensive ways to inspire more community spirit and civic action. A visually appealing #community increases property values, attracts businesses, and improves the neighborhood's image. Beauty is one of the three most influential factors in community attachment, which means loyalty, to your particular town or city.
