As far back in my life as I can remember, I have struggled with my mental health. Admitting this doesn’t feel like it used to; when I was younger, I felt like this was a weakness, a fatal flaw, and admitting it made me broken, or “less than.” But it doesn’t. Getting mental healthcare is no different than seeing the cardiologist: some of us need it, and some don’t, but just like a problem with your heart, seeking treatment for your mental health doesn’t make you weak. It makes you human. I have OCD and major depression. I take medicine every day. I also have success in my career. I have amazing relationships, both personal and professional. I do things a little differently than my peers, sure- but I am no less than I would be without mental illness. So, anyway. F*** the stigma- this month and every month. And if you feel like you need to get help, let’s talk about it. I can help you to the starting line.
This Mental Health Awareness month, we’re reminded of just how far we’ve come—and where we’re headed. But until everyone can access the quality mental health care they need, we know there's still work to be done. #mentalhealthawarenessmonth
