So excited for this next step for Licking County! Today myself and others from the Licking County Reentry Coalition Steering Committee completed our training to begin hosting a Citizen Circle monthly for Licking County. 🙌🙌🙌 Taken directly from ODRC: “Citizen Circles create partnerships that promote positive interactions, social support, and accountability for justice-involved individuals. Together, justice-involved individuals and Citizen Circle members embark on a journey of transformation to create fundamental changes in people, relationships, and communities. Citizen Circles provide a holistic and collective approach to individuals at any stage of their reentry. Many need assistance immediately upon release; however, at times others who have been released for a period of time may need specific assistance from the Circle, such as obtaining employment. Goals of Citizen Circles include: Reintegration: To support individuals with a seamless transition back to Ohio communities. Community Partnerships: Community members take an active role in developing partnerships to assist individuals. Accountability: Justice-involved individual’s responsibility and commitment to positive change.”

🌟Great to see Insights below from our recent partner roundtable in Durham, where we delved into strategies for enhancing sustained outcomes for individuals transitioning from custody and remand. 🤝One key finding from our mentoring service analysis: individuals often don't reside in the same area as the prison they exit. That's why our partnership models prioritise scalable mentoring services with local delivery. This approach ensures consistency of service provision, a crucial factor in driving positive outcomes. 📈Our analysis also underscores the importance of programme continuity. Those who complete a mentoring programme tend to experience significantly greater improvements compared to early exits. 🗣️And beyond quantitative data, our analysis reveals a recurring benefit of our approach — the advocacy provided by mentors. This personal touch plays a vital role in empowering individuals and navigating their onward journey. Excited to continue this dialogue and explore further opportunities for impact The Wise Group

As we celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth this February, we at CCH know that it's essential to reflect not only on the achievements and resilience of Black Americans throughout history, but also on the persistent challenges they face today. We know that due to structures of systemic racism, homelessness disproportionately affects Black Americans. In our city, Black Chicagoans make up more than half (53%) of the total population experiencing homelessness. Nationwide, Black Americans make up roughly 13% of the general population, but they account for 39% of people experiencing homelessness and more than 50% of families with children experiencing homelessness. To CCH, honoring Black communities means working towards a future where everyone has access to secure and stable housing, because housing is a human right. Here's the tea on what happened after #Juneteenth: Although General Order No. 3 was an important milestone, slavery didn't truly end that day. While it promised Black Texans equal rights, it also told them to stay on plantations as "employees." The formerly enslaved were encouraged to sign labor contracts with their former enslavers, leading to sharecropping — a system that often trapped Black folx in debt and poverty. Despite these challenges, freedpeople persisted during the Reconstruction period (1865-1874). They voted, organized, demanded fair wages, educated themselves, worshiped freely, and held political office. However, increasing violence and diminishing opportunities led many to establish their own communities, known as Freedman's Towns or Freedom Colonies. Between 1865 and 1930, over 500 Freedom Colonies were established across East Texas. These colonies provided safe havens where African Americans could reunite with loved ones and escape debt bondage and violence. One notable community was the Tenth Street Historic District in #Dallas, #Texas. The settlement expanded as freedpeople purchased lots and built beautiful bungalow and craftsman-style homes. This area became a hub for social, political, and economic organizing. Excluded from white society, families here created a vibrant world of their own. They built their own economy with Black-owned businesses providing essential services and social spaces. As the nation's largest and most-intact Freedman's Town, Tenth Street offers a rare view into Dallas's past and highlights the resilience of Black American communities everywhere. Our work continues to document, preserve, and amplify Tenth Street's rich history.
