Inertia Creeps has given me the opportunity to challenge myself to understand the challenges facing leaders and organisations in a 'future world of work' (well lets face it it is a NOW world of work). I am increasingly of the opinion that the challenges in work reflect our challenges in society. How do we build connection in a divisive political world. How do we create actual inclusion rather than a tick the box diversity culture. My next episode features a chat with West End star and performance coach Crystal Nicholls. A really cool discussion on the challenges of being a black woman auditioning for roles, of balancing being a mother and a performer, and of the importance for performers to use rejection as motivation. Working on new cabaret characters… 💃 It’s a lot of fun! The creative process can be frustrating at times, but it’s also incredibly fulfilling when it goes right. Still, the work we do is always developing and changing. It’s the nature of live performance (especially cabaret) that the audience will affect your approach in some way, whether it’s subtly or outright - like if you’re reacting to their energy vs. involving them actively. The work changes every night we perform, and it keeps growing. Every theatre needs to get behind this campaign: ‘theatre for every child’. If literacy, oracy and empathy become educational priorities, then theatre, drama and performance will be ideally placed to support the recovery of the generation most affected by Covid and the narrowing of the curriculum. Regional mid-scale presenting venues should not leave the campaigning to the subsidised producing venues with learning teams. Some of the most innovative, creative and successful mid-scale touring work is created for young people. Help electoral candidates to better understand the value of venues that can host quality touring productions (that often come with opportunities for participation) by sharing this campaign with them.
