Signal Maintainers are among the first responders of the railroads—whether it's a signal issue, fire, or tree down, they're ready to assess and fix any issues so that trains can continue moving.
Signal Foreman Nick Quintana walks us through the day in the life of this important job.
My name is Nicholas Quintana. I'm a signal foreman
for Metro-North, and I've been here for nine years. When I started at Metro-North,
I started as a signal trainee. I was a maintainer
for seven years. I have moved up from maintainer
to assistant inspector to now foreman. The responsibilities of signal
maintainer are to do testing, inspections, repairs and just
general maintenance of the signal system. Our system tells the trains
what speed they can go at, so if a circuit goes down that
will greatly impact the movement of trains. They'll have to drop down to
possibly restricted speed, which is 15 miles an hour. If a circuit goes down,
that becomes critical just to keep things moving. We maintain the signals,
switches, fouling wires, track wires, bond boxes. We also do crossings. We do house maintenance,
relay testing, anything, anything that essentially
touches our system- we test it. Our Signal Maintainers are
pretty much the first responders for the Railroad-
whether it be a fire, whether it be a signal issue,
whether it be even a tree down. Signal Maintains are the first
ones that Transportation calls to go out there and give eyes
on the ground as far as what's going on in the field. Every day is a new day. Signal Maintainers,
we come across anything. We just walk in and
we go accordingly. A Signal Maintainer should be
someone that's not afraid to get involved or hands
on with the system itself. It all serves to get
trains to move. I find this job motivating, uh,
just by the people that I work with. And we all have a similar goal
and that's to do things safely out here. I feel pride in
the work that I do. It's a representation of
knowing that people are getting to where they
want to go safely. That means I did
good work, or, we did good work. When you're sitting on the
train and you're heading to wherever your destination is,
just know that we're out there. We're making sure that you're
getting where you need to go safely.
