Veteran Housing Corp reminds you that #HOMELESSNESS IS THE RESULT OF DECADES OF THE FAILURE TO BUILD AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR ALL. THE HISTORY AND PRESENT STATE OF THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX IN AMERICA CAN BE SUMMED UP IN ONE WORD: BROKEN DON'T BE FOOLED BY SLICK PROMOTIONAL POSTS THAT MAKE IT SEEM LIKE YOUR LOCAL, STATE OR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ELECTED AND APPOINTED OFFICIALS ARE SOLVING THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING CRISIS. WHEN IT COMES TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING, THE PUBLIC AND TAXPAYERS MUST ASK: AT WHAT COST TO THE TAXPAYERS AND HOW LONG IS THE AFFORDABILITY PERIOD? EVERY TAXPAYER SHOULD BE ASKING THEIR ELECTED AND APPOINTED OFFICIALS THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: 1. How much local, state, and federal funding, tax credits, density bonus increase, waivers of impact fees, or other government benefit or incentive did the project receive? 2. What is the affordability period for each project and, if the affordability period is not in perpetuity or permanent, WHY NOT? 3. What guarantees exist that tenants in the affordable housing units will not be displaced after an "affordability period expires? Any LOCAL, STATE or FEDERAL official that does not MANDATE "permanent" affordability periods or affordability "IN PERPETUITY" for any project receiving some government benefit is commiting MALFEASANCE and should quit, be removed from office or be terminated. IN MOST CASES WHEN IT COMES TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING, the public and taxpayer are being fooled into thinking their elected and appointed officials are solving problems, when in fact, all hey have done is "KICK THE CAN DOWN THE ROAD" to burden a future generation with the same problem or crisis!
Today, Funders Together filed an amicus brief with our partners at National Alliance to End Homelessness and Enterprise Community Partners for the Johnson v. Grants Pass case to urge #SCOTUS to protect the lives and rights of our unhoused neighbors across the country. “As institutions that invest and support proven solutions to homelessness and housing instability, philanthropy has a responsibility to also utilize its voice to protect our unhoused neighbors’ rights and lives,” said Amanda Andere, CEO of Funders Together to End Homelessness. “This brief emphasizes our organization’s and member’s unapologetic support for solutions that are rooted in humanity, choice, and the understanding that everyone deserves a safe place to call home." https://lnkd.in/gztVPRBY

You can watch us on BBC News here. The Black community are most likely to experience statutory homelessness (no fixed address Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) stats). Looking back, being neurodivergent increased a lot of my access issues. Being unorganised, procrastinating, struggling to make that first call due to anxiety. People are surprised that you can come from a financially stable or middle-class home, have a family and still become homeless. It depends on your support network and family dynamics. It's the little things that make a difference. Signposting to grants, housing registers and someone understanding their rights is a big deal. I didn't even know what a housing register was. At Black Heritage Support Service we re-establish communication in families, we advise, advocate for clients, explain processes, design life action plans for clients and signpost if we can't help. We need more funding to continue our work. We will also help anyone of any background, you do not have to be Black or Caribbean. You can donate to BHSS here :) https://lnkd.in/eM-az_rx #community #homelessnessawareness #advocacymatters

A message from our Trustees and staff. In light of the disorder and violence seen across the country over the last week, Croydon Voluntary Actions wants to reach out to our communities and beyond. Like so many others, we have been appalled by the racist violence that has been used to terrorise communities across the UK. The roots of this hatred and intimidation lie deep in our society - fed and exploited over many years. However, what has become even more apparent this last week is how individual and community acts of love, care, and resistance have challenged, with such apparent confidence, any drift into believing that we are anything but united against hatred, intolerance and division. The strength of Croydon is in the diversity of this great borough and our message is clear that we are united against hatred, intolerance and division. People or the organisations we work alongside will not stand for these challenges to community cohesion. Charities, community groups and faith organisations will not bow down to threats. We already work hand in hand delivering social change, improving people’s lives, and responding to emergencies - and we will continue to do so to defeat those responsible for these horrific acts. #strongertogether

Every day the media shares stories about how young people are harming themselves and others. We also hear about a few quick, but likely ineffective short-term solutions - more police, harsher penalties and prison sentences. It's time to hear from the community. What does Memphis want for our young people? What is Memphis currently providing for our youth that helps them avoid contact with the juvenile justice system? What is working to ensure our young people have opportunities to achieve well-being - health, happiness, and success? What diversion programs exist, which successfully help our youth get on track after interaction with the juvenile justice system? Let's commit to listen and implement long-term solutions that can address the harm. We need your help - click the link below to donate and learn what's planned for 2024. https://bit.ly/46u9Mje

January is National Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and we would like to take a moment to acknowledge the severity of trafficking - the crime of stealing freedom for profit - as well as rally support to tackle this issue. By creating awareness, we can aid those who have been silenced and lack the agency to speak for themselves. Collectively, we have the responsibility to target inhumane issues and can do so through philanthropic investments. To learn more about trafficking and how it affects children, as well as vetted nonprofits working to fight this horrendous issue, visit "Initiatives" on our SaltExchange website (https://lnkd.in/e8wXg6Sv) to view our philanthropic reports. Special thanks to these organizations leading the battle against trafficking / exploitation and empowering survivors: International Justice Mission Many Hopes Nomi Network Street Grace Allies Against Slavery Human Trafficking Institute The Freedom Fund Safe House Project Justice Defense Fund The Foundation United and ALLIANCE FOR FREEDOM RESTORATION AND JUSTICE. #humantraffickingawareness #humantraffickingawarenessmonth #collectiveimpact #socialimpact #socialinvestment #giving #collectiveaction

Domestic violence is a widespread issue that affects millions of individuals across the globe, transcending boundaries of age, race, and socioeconomic status. It manifests in various forms, including physical, emotional, psychological, and financial abuse, leaving deep and lasting scars on survivors. In the face of this pervasive problem, numerous organizations have dedicated themselves to providing essential support and advocacy for those impacted by domestic violence. These charities play a critical role in offering safety, healing, and hope to survivors, while also working tirelessly to prevent further abuse through education, policy advocacy, and community engagement. https://lnkd.in/gx78wBaB

Global Generosity Movement Tuesday November 28, 2023 is a day to focus on ways to contribute to our communities and improve lives of others. HMSHost @ Toronto Pearson YYZ have an annual Warm Weather Drive in support of our Homeless Youth in Peel Region. We donate coats, gloves, hats, blankets , sweaters, boots and socks to "Our Place Peel". As our cold weather months approach and pressure on affordable housing and shelters our donations will make a difference. A few years ago I rehired an associate who had faced homelessness and had lost his toes from frostbite- our goal is to help the youth and support them during challenging times. Everyone Counts - a Community Report noted the following statistics. ( Peel) 27% of respondents indicated they first experienced homelessness as a youth. 6% of respondents indicated they first experienced homelessness as a child. "Homelessness is often the result of what are known as systemic or societal barriers including a lack of affordable and appropriate housing. the individual/households financial, mental, cognitive, behavioural or physical challenges, and/or racism and discrimination". It is with great honor and humility that I write we are committed to supporting communities all around the world. We are Change Makers ! #Avolta #HMShost #givingtuesday #journeyon #changemakers

A powerful and informative video and research. Worth a watch!
The National Home Visiting Resource Center (NHVRC) has released two products highlighting the potential role of home visiting in meeting the diverse needs of unhoused families. A new brief, entitled “Home Visiting as Part of a Holistic Approach to Supporting Unhoused Families,” linked here, https://urbn.is/4apn5Vk, introduces three agencies that include home visiting as part of their comprehensive approach (New Moms, Lydia Place, Reach Dane); it also provides a statewide look at Minnesota’s collaborations with the Ojibwe Nation and various nonprofits. The brief concludes with a list of strategies for other home visiting programs to consider when serving people in similar circumstances. Their latest video, “Building on Strengths: Reaching Unhoused Families With Home Visiting Parent Support Programs,” provides a firsthand look at services delivered by Washington-based Lydia Place and the agency’s decision to incorporate home visiting to help break the cycle of homelessness. Two parents also share their experiences with the agency and how home visiting has influenced their lives. https://urbn.is/3v44H46

Frustration, anger, and hopelessness are often pervasive among those wishing to help in times of crisis. It’s a stark acknowledgment that systems of care and relief efforts are inadequate, and meaningful and accessible solutions remain unclear. Amidst this, the younger generation has led the way in mobilizing masses— whether through organizing food drives, establishing neighborhood support networks, or donating items/ food/ money. At the heart of this lies mutual aid. Mutual aid centers collective power, transformative justice, and liberation through direct action for communities. To those seeking to ground themselves in the origins and urgency of mutual aid, I recommend reading Mutual Aid by Dean Spade. But don’t stop there– support your community with this understanding. Each of us holds the power to resist, demand better systems, and build a more equitable future, starting with the empowerment of our most oppressed and marginalized communities.
