From August 2020: I have to ask why I do not have a full-time teaching position yet, is it... -because there are quotas and districts must interview a percentage of candidates outside of the immediate area/district with no intent of hiring such individuals? -because hiring is based on budget not on the right candidate for the job: educated, experienced, and certified -because recruiting is not done, only hiring over the summer months hence little to no time for interviews, spouse notice at his/her employment, student record transfer, home search, moving, etc -because of my age? -because I am not originally from here or there? -because I did not graduate from the school district? -because I am not related to anyone in the district? -because of the amount of experience I have? -because of the number of certifications I have? -because I am a 2nd career educator? -because I am a parent? -because I care too much? -because I continue to seek out learning? -because I advocate for better? -because I grew up in central Troy (8th street)? -and because I believe in equity for all children? Why?

This was interesting! from the Careers and Enterprise Company. Getting teachers into the working world and back into the classroom to share notes. For sure making school relevant is excellent for raising the engagement and aspiration of students. #nicework #raisingaspiration #teaching #education #careerdevelopment #studentlife #schoolsuk
Our #TeacherEncounters programme gets teachers out of the classroom and into the world of work. By engaging directly with employers, teachers get valuable insights into different career pathways, essential #skills for the workplace and can form the connection between industry and their teaching subject. These insights help teachers enrich their curriculum and broaden young people’s horizons, increasing their awareness of opportunities open to them and preparing them for their best next step. When I entered the workforce as a therapist after grad school, I quickly realized I wasn't any good at it. There's simply no amount of education, studying, training, interning, and supervision that can prepare you for everything you're going to hear when you have a client sitting across from you. I went to a fantastic school, had engaged professors, connected with peers, aced my licensure exams, and met amazing mentors during my lengthy internship and practicum. Still, I felt unqualified, unprepared, and ineffective. Eventually, I left the profession. In my short time at Reading Horizons, speaking with current and past educators, I've learned that teaching is similar. We assume that teachers go to school and then know how to teach. Unfortunately, it's not that simple. You may learn one method in school and then be required to use a completely different method in the classroom. You may be given an ineffective or complex curriculum to follow. You may have a class full of students with learning or behavioral challenges you don't know how to address. These hurdles can leave educators feeling discouraged, unmotivated, and burnt out—eventually leading them to leave the profession. And with the ongoing teacher shortage, that's the last thing we need. The best thing we can do to normalize these common concerns is to talk about them openly and regularly. My colleague, Katie Shelton, recently published a courageous article outlining what she wishes she'd known as a new elementary school teacher. Now, she's turned her learnings into tips for new and even tenured educators.
