💡 Most of us have heard of “college undermatching”, a phenomenon in which highly-qualified students don’t apply to or attend selective postsecondary institutions for which they are academically qualified, but have you heard of “career undermatching”? It’s when students have earned degrees and pursue jobs that don’t require that particular degree. 🕵️ There are undoubtedly a variety of reasons why recent college graduates would choose a job for which they are overqualified. As secondary school counselors and advisors, we can ensure that students are aware of the variety of postsecondary credentialing that exists as a way to help them determine the type of credentialing that is required for the job or career they hope or expect to achieve.

For everyone who's sitting for placements in the upcoming semester, here's a little something for you... It is common for organisations to conduct an intermediate round of Group Discussion (GD) as part of on-campus recruitments due to the sheer volume of applications. At times, there might be as many as ten to twelve students in one round of GD, the duration of which doesn't usually exceed 10 minutes. Which means, give or take, you get a minute or less to speak. There are three ground rules of a GD if you wish to get selected:- (a) you speak atleast once; if you don't, you're rejected (b) your perspective is relevant and crisp (c) you respect the other members and do not get wild. I practised about ten to twelve topics for this round, both for and against the motion. And to help everyone who will face this round, I have compiled a list of 30 MOST FREQUENTLY given GD topics. This list has the recommendations of several people who have been there, done that. Along with that, I have covered the top 5 topics according to me, and build a list of pointers to aid you in your preparation. I do not guarantee that your GD topic will be one mentioned in the document, but your practice while preparing for those will definitely help you ace the round. If you wish to access the document, please drop your mail ID in the comments below, and I will send you the document ASAP. #placement #groupdiscussion #document #topics #recruitment

From August 2020: I have to ask why I do not have a full-time teaching position yet, is it... -because there are quotas and districts must interview a percentage of candidates outside of the immediate area/district with no intent of hiring such individuals? -because hiring is based on budget not on the right candidate for the job: educated, experienced, and certified -because recruiting is not done, only hiring over the summer months hence little to no time for interviews, spouse notice at his/her employment, student record transfer, home search, moving, etc -because of my age? -because I am not originally from here or there? -because I did not graduate from the school district? -because I am not related to anyone in the district? -because of the amount of experience I have? -because of the number of certifications I have? -because I am a 2nd career educator? -because I am a parent? -because I care too much? -because I continue to seek out learning? -because I advocate for better? -because I grew up in central Troy (8th street)? -and because I believe in equity for all children? Why?
