The last hurdle for students as they prepare to graduate and enter the profession is to obtain their entry level LMSW license. One of the requirements for licensure is passing the ASWB exam which has a long standing and national history of bias against graduates of color. Yet, there is absolutely no evidence that it correlates with effective social work practice. This community chat will introduce students to our campaign to eliminate the entry level exam as a requirement for licensure in New York State. We will focus on how we can build the power, voice, and stature of social workers, the important role students can play in this campaign, and what a difference the legislation will make for graduates, and hiring in social agencies. Most importantly, the legislation will increase and diversify the social work workforce needed in New York to address such major social crises as addiction, homelessness, immigration, and youth mental health. We will also introduce students to Social Workers for Justice, a statewide organization dedicated to building the power of social workers to make systemic change for our workforce and the communities we serve. With #decisionday tomorrow, conversations about the rising cost of college have provided us with opportunities to showcase the value of a career-focused education delivered by NJ's county vocational-technical schools. Thank you to ROI-NJ for the ongoing opportunity to highlight these schools, which provide a head start and often savings on college, making them a strong option for any student - regardless of their post-secondary plans. https://lnkd.in/e98QSX5i

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has started the work to recruit 6,500 thousand new teachers, as well as stemming the absolute exodus of teachers that started in the pandemic. This includes a ‘reset’ on the government’s relationship and a transformation of the image of teaching – and I think this is vital. I’m oversimplifying here, but teachers have been telling us loud and clear for a long time now that they feel unsupported, overworked and neglected. For many industries, the pandemic was a shake up that saw widespread reforms in flexible working and employee rights and really shone a light on all the inefficiencies we’d been living with because it was just ‘how things are done’. Teaching did not get this treatment. Schools were hit incredibly hard, and saw basically none of the change – things just went ‘back to normal’. As a result, teaching as a profession has a churn rate that is genuinely eye-watering, and completely unsustainable. A hard reset, with teachers and their interests held at the forefront, is not only needed – I think it’s the only sensible option.

Fully funded public schools are an essential element of a fair and prosperous society. Fully funding public schools is an essential first step in making Australia’s schooling system stronger and fairer and ensuring every child can have their needs met. It is also essential to address critical teacher shortages which are driven by unsustainable workloads and uncompetitive salaries.

'Tis the beginning of the school year...time for subbing and tutoring. But it's also time for the topic of "Pay to Play" to be discussed. The benefits of "non-academic" activities to the health and welfare of the current students are well documented, but so is the long-term impact. The high fees limit student participation by many who need the social interaction and the resultant team-build education for FUTURE success in the real world. As an educator, I concur that a relationship between academics and non-academic activities can be an essential element for general medical health as well as social and cultural health. 🏀 🏈 🎨 🎭 #community #education #extracurricular

Fabulous results from Hills Road Sixth Form College students published today. To support us in continuing this work we need to be able to retain and recruit high quality teaching staff. Yet sadly currently the government's approach to funding the 5.5% pay rise does not include further education colleges including 43 non-academised Sixth Form Colleges like ours. We face a perverse situation where very similar institutions, delivering similar qualifications in similar demographic areas through teachers with similar qualifications and experience will receive quite different levels of funding, simply on the basis of their legal/organisational status and designation. This will lead to disparity in pay and is both illogical and unfair. If the government can't afford 5.5% for the whole education sector, let's have a slightly lower settlement they can afford to fund for the whole sector, rather than leaving out a group who deliver 22% of the country's A Levels and a myriad of important technical and vocational qualifications, often serving some of the most disadvantaged in society. Please sign this petition if you agree and share with others who may have an interest in this issue. https://chng.it/bGLvsHRfrm #education #furthereducation #sixthformcolleges

Although the number of state government employees excluding those involved in the educational services field began to grow rapidly beginning in early 2023, so far this century the number of people working for state governments and state government agencies has remained relatively flat over the decades, with an increase of only 73,200 (2.66% overall) since January 2001. The number of state government employees who work for educational institutions, on the other hand, has increased by 417,800 / 21.28% during the same time frame. Like their non-educational brethren, state government employees working in various seasonal educational services field also saw a significant jump in new hires beginning in early 2023. patreon.com/mikeodonnell
