Transforming Communities: Growing Food, Jobs, and Hope in South Dallas 🌿 Restorative Farms aims to embody selfless community service and spearheads a collaborative coalition of community entities centered around a South Dallas agrisystem. At our Hatcher Station Training Farm, we not only cultivate food but also nurture employment opportunities, fostering agrisystem careers, improving incomes, allowing our future urban farmers the opportunity to self-evolve while giving back to the community. Our farm manager-in-training, Ray Piper, serves as an excellent example. Despite a demanding farm schedule—comprising of tasks like growing, harvesting, and organizing over 300 CSAs—Ray still managed to find time to donate 117 pounds of our excess locally grown organic greens to the Austin Street Center. We will continue to evangelize and help build a professional bioeconomy and S. Dallas agrisystem. Why did I plant my plants over the Easter hols❓ 🩳 (they are not my pants, there's another story there, but for another day... ⁠) It's because we're joining in with The Country Trust "Plant Your Pants" campaign to bring awareness of soil health. The submission window for the Texas A&M Forest Service Community Forestry Grant Program is now open and will close February 16, 2024.  The Community Forestry Grant Program is offering more than $16 million in competitive grant opportunities for community, civic and neighborhood groups to promote the management and enhancement of urban and community forest ecosystems and provide positive impacts throughout the state of Texas. Public and non-profit entities eligible for these grants include State and local government agencies, public education institutions, NGOs or non-profits, tribal entities and public utility districts.  Another goal outlined in the foundation of the grant program is to increase tree coverage to 30% on Texas school campuses through schoolyard forests grants. Access to green spaces and trees are essential in human development. Did you know that January 6th is celebrated as "National Take Down Your Christmas Tree Day"? If you still have your Christmas tree up, please consider repurposing it. Every year, around 25 million live Christmas trees are purchased in the US alone. In celebration of #PollinatorWeek, here are some easy tips to build a pollinator paradise in your own backyard, front stoop, or balcony window: 🐝 Avoid pesticides – some of them are highly toxic to bees and other pollinators. Explore alternative ways to grow healthy plants. This means choosing plants that repel pests and opting for non-toxic pest control options. 🐝 Provide a shallow source of clean water. Shallow water sources provide enough water for pollinators without creating opportunities for mosquitoes to breed. 🐝 Offer diversity in plants and staggered blooming times to keep pollinators well-fed all season. Native plants are always best – exercise due diligence before planting! 🐝 Allow for wild places as habitat – leave some ground undisturbed and maintain some brushy areas so wild bees have a place to nest. Introducing Hedgerow Heroes - Our new project to help restore the hedgerow network in Herefordshire! Hedgerows are a haven for wildlife, help reduce flooding and run-off, and capture carbon dioxide. They play a vital role in our environment, acting as linear forests, and are our largest connected 'nature reserve.' One in ten vulnerable species in the UK, including hedgehogs and dormice, depend on hedgerows. To continue benefiting from them we need to protect, sustain, and expand our hedgerows for our well-being and future existence. Project Aims - Collaborate with local communities, schools, landowners, and farmers to raise awareness about the importance of hedgerows. - Help manage existing hedges. - Plant at least 2.5km of new hedgerows by April 2025! Funding We are thrilled to have secured funding for 2.5km of new hedgerows and community work, but we want to plant more! If we secure additional funding, we aim to plant 2.8km or even 3km of new hedgerows by April 2025. We need your help to achieve this! It is Bees’ Needs Week 2024 : 8 to 14 July 2024 🐝❤️ Bees’ Needs Week is an annual event coordinated by Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs), working alongside a host of organisations such as conservation groups, businesses, and charities. The aim of the week is to raise awareness of the importance of #pollinators, and share ideas, actions and activities that highlight the ways in which everyone can help #bees and other pollinators to thrive. There are 5 simple actions that anyone can take to help pollinators: 1. Grow more #Nectar rich flowers, shrubs and trees. Using window or balcony boxes are good options if you don’t have a garden. 2. Let patches of garden and land grow wild. 3. Cut grass less often. 4. Do not disturb insect nests and hibernation spots. 5. Ever heard of a honey possum? As a Canadian who recently moved to Australia, I never knew they existed. And let me tell you, I've been missing out my whole life. They are fascinating little creatures. Adults weigh approximately 10g – that’s roughly 2 teaspoons of sugar! Southwestern Australia is the only place they can get their habitat needs met. These tiny things are pollinators and need access to pollen and nectar year round. It’s hard to believe, but they spend most of their time on the ground with no protection from predators. I recently read a blog by Trillion Trees Australia about honey possums. This organisation is on the front lines working to save these adorable animals because they’re facing big threats from habitat loss. Their goal is to increase donations to support restoration activities that would impact honey possums. Just as each honey possum has a unique story of struggle and (hopefully) triumph, your non-profit has many unique and inspiring stories waiting to be told, too. One of the best ways to tell your story is through an informative blog that connects with readers on an emotional level. Blogs work overtime. Highlighting your wins, challenges, and pressing need for donations and volunteer efforts while you sleep. Plus, they're an effective way to drive traffic to your site through SEO and do a great job at positioning your non-profit as a thought leader.
