We know where our coffee comes from, but how many of us are conscious of where it ends up? Historically, ground coffee has been sent to landfill - releasing harmful emissions into the atmosphere. Our model brings coffee from farm, to cup, back to farm. Ground coffee is collected directly from cafes and delivered free of charge to home, community and school gardens where the grounds are used to help soil flourish. A truly circular solution! Circular Coffee holds roasters accountable for the end-to-end care of their product, giving customers full transparency on the journey of their daily cup of coffee. Say no to plastic-packaged mineral water in cafes and restaurants! It's frustrating to see packed plastic water bottles on every table in cafes and restaurants. Every cafe, restaurant, and hotel has a water purifier installed, so why not drink that? It's the same water they use to cook your food. Ordering bottled water is a waste of your money, and resources, and creates plastic pollution. Here's how much of a difference it could make: Imagine a cafe with 25 tables, each seating 4 people. That's a maximum capacity of 100 people. On weekdays, let's assume 40% occupancy, or 40 people seated. Assuming each person spends an hour there, and the cafe is open for 8 hours a day, that's 320 people served per day. If two people share a water bottle, then 160 water bottles are consumed / day on weekdays. On weekends, occupancy could easily reach 100% at dinner time. Let's assume an overall average occupancy of 80%. That's 320 water bottles consumed per day. Over a week, that's 160*5+320*2=1440 water bottles! That's just one cafe/restaurant/hotel. Imagine the impact if we all made the switch to purified water instead of buying packaged drinking water. #plasticpollution #saynotoplastic

So far, in partnership with Single O, we've diverted over 24,000 kilograms of coffee from participating cafes. Our model empowers roasters to take end-to-end care for their product by integrating the cost of sustainable coffee recycling into their service structure. This lowers the barrier for cafes to participate in resource recovery and directly benefits our immediate communities by delivering ground coffee to local home, community, and school gardeners to nourish soil (completely free of charge!). Across many European countries, it's common for customers to bring their own reusable containers to supermarkets, butchers, and takeaway spots. This practice is especially popular in the Netherlands, where rigorous measures against single-use plastics make reusables a more attractive option.   When ordering takeout or delivery, Dutch customers face mandatory fees for disposable plastic cups and containers. For those dining in at restaurants or attending events with controlled access, the use of disposable plastics is completely banned. In Berkeley, California, in compliance with the City's litter and foodware reduction ordinance, food vendors like cafés and boba shops are required to switch their non-compostable (petro-plastic clear cups and paper cups with a petro-plastic liner) single-use cups to a compostable single-use cup (or not use single-use cups at all). Some cafés are marketing these new single-use compostable cups as "sustainable", which I think leads customers to think they are "good" for the environment. But the cafés and boba shops are also required to offer reusable cups for dine-in and even though they are required to charge an extra 25 cents for the single-use cups, I still see these businesses filled with folks drinking out of single-use cups - even when they could have gotten their drink in a reusable cup for no extra charge! So it seems that the reusable cups should instead be the ones marketed as "sustainable" but they aren't getting that love. The "convenience" and "to-go" culture is to blame for this mess and we need to change that somehow. Western Australia's policy posted below is good, but it needs to be paired with a comprehensive policy and Berkeley's needs to be updated with more incentives and messaging to create behavior change and a new "drink culture" based on reusable foodware as the best and most "sustainable" option.

Is this the beginning of the end for disposable coffee cups? Earlier this month, Western Australia (WA) became the first Australian state to ban non-compostable plastic-lined coffee cups. It’s predicted the ban will prevent 150 million disposable cups ending up in landfill or littering the beaches, streets and waterways of WA every year. Businesses who fail to comply face the threat of hefty fines up to $25,000, and individuals are at risk of a $5,000 fine. But WA’s new law is not without controversy. The ban excludes compostable coffee cups and many coffee shops have already started offering the compostable variety on the understanding that these can be disposed of in FOGO (food organics, garden organics) bins from where it will be composted at industrial scale composting facilities. But with no rules or standards in place to control the labeling of items as compostable, there is concern that items will be placed in the wrong bins, potentially contaminating the entire waste system.
