From 1 July 2024, amendments to the Liquor Regulation 2019 will come into effect. This means takeaway and grocery store licensees in the Darwin urban liquor control area can ask customers intending to purchase take away alcohol where they intend to consume the alcohol. Licensees can refuse service to a customer if: o the customer cannot state the place where the alcohol is intended to be consumed; or o if the intended location is a prohibited public place or other restricted area. These changes are part of a broader suite of measures aimed at tackling alcohol related crime and anti-social behaviour in the Northern Territory. There should be no more talk of the three tier system, the "three channel system" is already here and functioning in some states, as an industry, we need to embrace this, educate legislators that it can and does work effectively. It is not an either or, but an inclusive distribution system that helps producers, consumers, warehouses, and retailers. It works in all other industries, it can and does work for the beverage alcohol market as well. Now I know the dangers of grog 🍺 smokes 🚬 and now vapes🎐. BUT they can all be monitored, regulated and taxed. Illegal "party" drugs not so much. The suppliers don't really care and it's probably a lot more economical for them to distribute thru' the super markets. As an aside, how good Aldi even cutting out the manufacturers 😂 The government's don't care. It seems like only yesterday that they covid-19 screwed pubs, leaving supermarkets to take up the slack😂 Now they return to the hospitality tap, with no shame and definitely less conscience. Alcohol industry reps tell the Sun newspaper of their concern that a Labour win will mean more steps are taken to reduce alcohol harms amid the ongoing record surge in alcohol deaths, which fall heaviest among the less well off. https://lnkd.in/dxfBG93y In 2022, there were 10,048 deaths in the UK from alcohol-specific causes, the highest number on record. It is 32.8% higher than in 2019. But experts say the most effective way to reduce alcohol harms are measures on pricing , availability and marketing. Pub drinking is less of a concern than the rise and rise of drinking at home. Experts have praised the outgoing Conservative government's plan to remove a flat tax on wine, where drinkers of lower strength wine pay alcohol tax on water. But it also cut alcohol tax in real terms, so fuelling the spike in harm, while blocking minimum pricing in England.
