Northern Territory Government’s Post

From 1 July 2024, amendments to the Liquor Regulation 2019 will come into effect. This means takeaway and grocery store licensees in the Darwin urban liquor control area can ask customers intending to purchase take away alcohol where they intend to consume the alcohol. Licensees can refuse service to a customer if: o the customer cannot state the place where the alcohol is intended to be consumed; or o if the intended location is a prohibited public place or other restricted area. These changes are part of a broader suite of measures aimed at tackling alcohol related crime and anti-social behaviour in the Northern Territory. That’s not a law, it’s a suggestion and given the current media coverage of last years killing when refusal was given it’s certainly not going to be the norm. Why do we pay Government so much into the public purse to come up with rubbish to give the nodders something to nod at, whilst someone beats their chest announcing this a a great initiative instigated by the in-combat government that ‘will’ make the community a safer place….. bollocks

I notice Katherine is not on the list. But then again we seem to have all the water that the NT needs and should be consuming more of! This legislation is controversial. It would imply WE all have drinking problem in the Territory and I don’t believe ALL of us do. I might have a drinking problem if I can’t find my mouth because I am permanently disabled and need someone to help me with meals. I hope for the NT governments sake that whomever they are protecting it improves their lives because I believe this legislation will only serve those who have personal issues with certain other individuals possibly not related to their substance abuse issues.

I hope a change of Government at the upcoming election brings more appropriate legislation into place for alcohol related anti social behaviour and also "castle" laws enabling citizens to have rights to defend themselves in their own homes and on their own property..
