I welcome the resumption of trade negotiations with the Philippines. It's an important deliverable of the shared vision I discussed with President Bongbong Marcos during my visit to the Philippines in August. Marta Ledwos of our Paris office participated last Wednesday in the Market Access Day in Brussels organized by hub.brussels, in collaboration with Enterprise Europe Network, VLAIO, Flanders Investment & Trade, AWEX, BECI, FPS Foreign Affairs, and DG TRADE (European Commission). DG Trade presented on the enforcement and implementation of EU trade policy and its potential for Belgium. The presentation also covered various EU tools designed to support access to international markets. The focus was on highlighting the advantages of free trade agreements for the private sector. A special focus was given to the EU-New Zealand FTA, which entered into force on 1 May 2024, with insightful inputs on the past negotiation process as well as the current and future benefits. This was a very useful initiative for raising awareness about opportunities stemming from EU trade agreements among the private sector. And there are more to come. Appleton Luff encourages such initiatives and continues itself to offer customized services to assist the private sector in navigating through international trade complexities and capitalizing on trade agreements.

🛳️ What’s on the agenda of the next World Trade Organization Ministerial Conference in Abu Dhabi? How can trade policy strengthen the EU’s Open Strategic Autonomy? 🇪🇺 EU trade ministers are discussing these topics in today’s informal meeting in Brussels. 🇧🇪 Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Hadja Lahbib is chairing the meeting. 1/3 One of the working sessions focuses on the WTO’s 13th Ministerial Conference, which kicks off next month in Abu Dhabi (26-29 February). On the basis of the briefing of EVP Dombrovskis, the Ministers discuss the EU priorities as well as the possible outcomes of the World Trade Organization Ministerial Conference. The exchanges focus on the needed dispute settlement reform, industrial subsidies, e-commerce as well as fisheries and agriculture. 2/3 The EU’s Open Strategic Autonomy is the reference framework chosen by the EU to address the profound technological and geopolitical transformations taking place in the world. Open Strategic Autonomy is a horizontal priority of the Belgian Presidency and strategy in which EU trade policy plays a vital part by strengthening the Union’s resilience and competitiveness. As the world’s largest trading bloc, Europe has every interest in defending the rules-based trading system and our open strategic autonomy. 3/3 Chairman Bernd Lange of the Committee on International Trade (INTA) of the European Parliament gives an overview of trade issues under discussion at the European Parliament prior to the European elections. The floor is also open for interventions and exchanges of views with EVP Dombrovskis and Trade Ministers. #EU2024BE

MTI YEAR IN REVIEW – During 2023, the Ministry of Trade and Industry together with its state agencies continued to make its contribution in driving national development. Focused on improving the ease of doing business, creating opportunities for local manufacturers and generating increased employment in Trinidad and Tobago, the Ministry set several major targets and worked hard to achieve them. Achievements this year included boosted exports and investments, increased regional and international trade missions, strides in pursuit of the Government’s digital agenda, established partnerships focused on building human resource capacity for diversification, successful trade talks, more economic spaces marketed to international investors, and the expansion of various funding facilities and programmes targeting the business community, particularly small and medium enterprises. As we share a snapshot of some of the projects and initiatives undertaken by the MTI this year, we give the commitment to continue to collaborate with all stakeholders as we work together to build a strong and sustainable economy in 2024 and beyond. Here are some highlights.
