The new Reviews of deaths of children in care and certain other children – reviewable deaths in 2020 and 2021, considers how agencies and service providers identified and responded to risks and vulnerabilities evident in the lives of the children who died. The report also looks at how agencies and service providers implemented previous NSW Ombudsman recommendations. Reviewable deaths are where the child had died as a result of abuse or neglect or suspected abuse or neglect or had been living in care. Read the report https://ow.ly/aTMW50Qbmkx. This report was tabled yesterday in Parliament by the NSW Ombudsman as part of the Biennial report of the deaths of children in New South Wales: 2020 and 2021. #NSWOmbo

Call Congress and demand federal reforms to keep kids in #fostercare safe: https://lnkd.in/eciS2BZX Every 2 MINUTES in the US, a child is placed in dangerous state care, Once in state care, a child is more vulnerable to abuse, neglect, trafficking, and even death Studies show that the removal process alone causes trauma, but then the children and families are further abused and traumatized by the ‘System’. There is ample evidence to prove that providing services to families in need is the #1 deterrent to child neglect and abuse. Yet no reforms take place. There is no time to wait. Children are endangered and are suffering in state care every minute of every day. We must enact federal reforms NOW to keep children and families safe and thriving!

Fams endorses NAPCAN calling on the Commonwealth Government to host a National Summit to Prevent Child Maltreatment. Evidence from the recently released Australian Child Maltreatment Study means we simply cannot turn away from the reality of harm to children in Australia, and our duty to prevent this. A Summit will bring people together in a new way to: -Bring decision and policy makers from across governments and portfolios into the same room. -Learn from experts, academics, people working with children and families, and individuals with lived experiences from across the community. -Build a common understanding of what we already know about child abuse and neglect. -Talk openly and honestly about what is working and not working (and where the money is going and needs to go). -Explore the evidence on the root causes of maltreatment and find smarter solutions to prevent abuse. -Establish prevention of abuse as a national and whole-of-community priority. In response to the Daily Telegraph's front-page piece on Monday 'Tens of thousands of children at risk of abuse not seen in person by NSW government case workers', Fams has strongly lobbied for an increased investment into early intervention and prevention. “Early intervention programs are evidence-based, highly effective and are key to breaking the cycle of trauma and abuse," said Susan. "Part of the challenge in our child protection system is that children and families often need to be re-reported over and over again to access any kind of services. We need to make it easier, not harder for families, to move between the different services offered." “The frontline workers and not-for-profits in the early intervention and prevention system work incredibly hard and are incredibly talented. They just need more resources and support." Consider becoming an advocate to help include the #kidPROOFAct in upcoming legislation. Through a federal grant program, the Kid PROOF Act can help families store medications and other dangerous items in their homes when their child is in crisis. The grants will allow children’s health providers to give families items like lockboxes and safes to keep dangerous items away from children, #savinglives #preventingoverdoses and helping to #stopsuicides

Help spread the word for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15. It can be hard to imagine that anyone would deliberately want to harm an elderly person, but unfortunately, elder abuse is a widespread problem. Some instances of elder abuse are intended to exploit the person financially; you’ve probably heard of scams targeting seniors. In other cases, it’s simple negligence: Caregivers don’t provide the basic necessities, like nutritious food, appropriate medication, safety, or assistance with hygiene. If you see something, say something. 🚫🚔🚨 ❗❓: Did you know? 1 in every 10 - Is the number of elder adults that experience some form of abuse in their lifetime. #WorldElderAbuseAwareness #ProtectOurSeniors #ZempelInsurance #LakeMills #LakeMillsOffice #LakeMillsInsurance #ElderAbuseAwareness #ElderAbusePrevention #ElderlyCare #SeniorSafety #ElderlyRights #StopElderAbuse #SpreadAwareness #SayNoToElderAbuse

Did you know? Elder abuse remains a silent crisis, often unseen and unspoken. Behind the statistics are real stories of our seniors enduring abuse in silence. It's a startling fact that the majority of these cases, a staggering 96%, go unreported. This hidden epidemic is a cause for concern, and it's a call to action. We can make a difference by raising awareness and creating a safe space for our elders to speak out and seek help. Let's work together to change these numbers and protect our seniors. Our collective efforts can empower them to live their lives with the dignity and respect they deserve. 💪 . . . . . . The federal government cut funding to Adult Protective Services by more than $170 million between 2022 and 2023, even as 10,000 #babyboomers turn 65 each day. As a result, #aging #Americans lose access to resources for #abuse #intervention, affordable housing, meals, and medical care. $100 million from Congress means more case workers, more #scam #prevention, and more help to vulnerable victims. https://lnkd.in/eqaJitki

How sad are these UK facts - especially as they're all avoidable? 😢 Over 800 children aged one to nine die each year in the UK. One in eight of these deaths are caused by accidents. 😢 Last year, over 45,000 under-fives were admitted to hospitals as a result of accidents. Almost three-quarters of these accidents happened at home. 😢 Accidental injury is the leading cause of death for young people aged 10 to 19. 😢 There is a strong link between deprivation and the risk of death throughout childhood. ❗ Accidents are preventable ❗ Stats and image taken from the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT). #ChildSafety #ChildProtection #FirstAid #FirstAidTraining #SafeguardingTraining

No child should suffer from abuse or neglect, and anyone who is showing signs or symptoms needs immediate care. When the #USPSTF looked at the research on how clinicians can help children who do not show any signs of abuse or neglect, there was not enough evidence on the effectiveness of primary care interventions to prevent child maltreatment before it occurs. We continue to urgently call for more research on what healthcare professionals can do to better protect children from abuse and neglect. Read the final recommendation here: https://lnkd.in/ejfpCz24
