As a recent graduate of Towson University with a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications, I writing this to express my dissatisfaction regarding the current employment landscape for recent graduates. Many graduates, myself included, find ourselves facing significant challenges in securing positions that align with our qualifications and educational backgrounds. People like me, after dedicating five years to our studies, find it difficult to encounter a job market that often overlooks our skills in favor of experience. I believe it is essential for us, as emerging professionals, to receive greater recognition and support from employers. Creating pathways for internships, mentorships, and entry-level opportunities tailored to recent graduates could substantially improve our transition into the workforce. To any recruiter I urge you to consider the unique circumstances we face in today’s job market. I also encourage you to recognize our potential and consider our willingness to grow within your teams. To all 2024 graduates don’t get discouraged, but don’t underestimate yourselves as well. We deserve better!!! Together we can advocate for changes that will benefit not only recent graduates but also the industries we aspire to join!!!

In the second week of the module Employability and Managing Your Digital Footprint, we looked into what placement and graduate employers want from early career hires. This led me to reflect on my CV and edit it to improve my employability as an undergraduate applying for placements.

Fresh out of college, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, many seniors are stepping into their first jobs this month. Companies are eager to invest in training these new graduates. Yet, career changers and those re-entering the workforce often face a different reality. Let's explore this dynamic. Recent grads offer a blank slate, easily molded into their new roles. But career changers and returners bring valuable experience and fresh perspectives that businesses need. It's time for companies to reassess the value of investing in training for all, not just recent graduates. By embracing diverse experiences, organizations can create a more robust and inclusive workforce. To the college seniors starting their first jobs: Congratulations! Your journey is just beginning. This event builds on the success of the RMIT Career Fair, marking another milestone in our partnership to connect with and inspire early talent. While academic qualifications are important, having more work experience at the same age can be even more valuable in many industries. If your chosen career path doesn’t require a degree or certification, you shouldn’t spend unnecessary time in college. Too many people waste four years in university, only to find that their professional knowledge isn’t much stronger than some high school graduates. It’s important to evaluate your goals, understand the requirements of your desired field, and make decisions that maximize your time and potential. Sometimes, hands-on experience and early immersion in the workforce can set you apart far more effectively than a degree alone.

Regardless of job market conditions (though more challenging today than anytime since 2009), there are a few roles that can be entered that require little to no experience, or even formal education. 1. 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬 - I'd consider this a must-do job at some point in someone's career. You learn so many skills from time/project management, relationship building, marketing, product, etc. It's the perfect place from which to build a career in sales or launch a career down a different path. 2. 𝐈𝐓 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 - This is a role that can be found in most industries. As it relates to IT, there are many entry roles that don't require experience or a formal degree. An associates degree could do the trick, or some certifications through CompTIA would be good options. This is a great launching pad into other technical career paths. 3. 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐄𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲 - More of an admin/clerical role. Doesn't take much in the way of formal education, but does require high attention to detail. Similar to IT support, an associates degree related to "data" can be helpful, or other online options. Also a great place to build a foundation for other career paths.
