Wanted to take a moment to highlight a somewhat niche but still really cool new sports analytics thing…and to sing the praises of my wonderful former colleague, Matt Morris. 👏🏽 👏🏽 The new “Group Forecast” feature in ESPN’s 🏀 Tournament Challenge takes each bracket’s current *and future* picks and calculates out all potential final group standings based on the 32,768 different ways the rest of the tournament could play out. Using the BPI-based probability of each of those possibilities, it computes the overall chance that each entry will actually win the pool (and finish Top 3 or 5), along with the future outcomes to root for/against to maximize the bracket’s chance of winning. Basically, it sizes up how your group could look *at the end of the tournament*, not just right now. There’s some counterintuitive but interesting stuff that comes out, like a bracket with fewer current and potential max points having a better chance to win the group than others with more (current/potential) points, due to having more differentiated (and still reasonably probable) picks in the higher-value later rounds. Somewhat related: my wife is currently crushing me on the men’s side - she’s 1st and I’m last, 130 points behind - but we have similar chances to win the group because of my unique pick of Arizona winning the title (and some other differences among the brackets in our group). Who said analytics was taking the fun out of the game? 🙂 Now, on Matt: I still remember thinking how awesome it was when he showed a prototype of this analysis to me at ESPN nearly a decade ago. He’d run it “ad hoc” for his own groups (and mine, cause he was nice) in between the Sweet 16 and Final Four, and we talked about how cool it would be to have this built into actual tournament pools each March. (Sidenote: this was one of countless cool and amazing things Matt did while we worked together. He’s 1 of the best colleagues I ever had, and I learned so much from him. 🙏🏽 ) Fast forward to 2024 and the group forecast is actually in there for both the Men’s and Women’s Tournament Challenge - a great story of perseverance from Matt, and a great experience for fans. Be Heard: The Art of Moving On This past week, the Washington Commanders threaded an interesting perceptual needle. They traded away two prominent players from a 3 and 5 team yet wanted to position the moves publicly not as a sign of disinterest in competing for a playoff spot this year. This created an interesting news cycle vacuum. What they leaned on was the promise of a developing young quarterback, Sam Howell. Here is where the action plan was implemented (and successfully thanks to a stellar performance by Howell in the following game at New England): -The Press Conferences in the immediate aftermath of the trades were littered with positive messaging about the growth and development of Howell on the premise that all moves are about the future successes of the team. -Questions about the trades themselves were not given lengthy explanations and answers about direct questions were diverted to Howell and the positive growth of their young quarterback. -The team social media roll out had posts profiling Howell as the team's focal point of hope and growth labelling him "QB1" as in the quarterback of the team. For those in sports, this is a known parlance. The reasons behind dealing two former first round draft picks (both defensive ends) Chase Young and Montez Sweat are nuanced but rarely does that filter into public perception. So, the calculation was to divert attention away from moves that short term, in all likelihood, wouldn't help the team succeed. What is unknown is how a cycle will play out. Thanks to a strong performance in New England by Howell (look at the media focus on the Commanders in the aftermath of the win), the page was successfully turned, and the focus was shifted squarely on the future and hope.
