🚗How many electric vehicles (EVs) could we charge in Aotearoa New Zealand if we managed charging smartly?🔋 🤔How might people react if their EV charging is limited during peak times of electricity demand? These were some of the questions we sought answers to as part of a three-year Powerco trial into New Zealanders’ behaviour and preferences around EV charging. We recruited 80 EV drivers from across our network for our Smart EV Charging Project, installing smart charging units in their homes to collect information about their charging habits. EV uptake is increasing on our network, and we expect this to continue as Aotearoa decarbonises. This will create more demand for electricity, particularly at peak times of the day, which could significantly impact our network. We’re developing a Smart Charging Strategy as we work to prepare our networks for the future, and this trial has given us a fantastic insight into how we can support the expected increase in day-to-day electricity needs of New Zealanders. Interesting - Octopus Energy offers you to charge your electric vehicle for free, if you sign up for their new vehicle-to-grid (V2G) tariff "Power Pack". "This solution will automatically charge up your EV at the cheapest and greenest times, then discharging the EV’s battery back into the grid at times of demand – and this agreement means Octopus will let you charge your EV for free." The new scheme is in a beta stage at the moment, with just a handful of EVs compatible, but the company expects this to change in the coming months. I guess the success of the pilot will depend a lot on the impact on the primary use case of all EV drivers: Getting around. So while Octopus Energy will allow customers to set a minimum state of charge, this must be set to no more than 30%. Depending on the size of the battery and the individual driving pattern of a user, this can be a significant constraint. Other prerequisites are that drivers must charge less than 333kWh per month and stay plugged in at home for at least 12 hours. It will be interesting to see how much spontaneity and freedom car owners will be willing to "sell" - and overall how the business models in the emerging space of V2X will develop. #automotiveindustry #electricvehicles #transportation #electricvehicle #ev #emobility

Range anxiety is a huge obstacle to electric vehicle adoption. The vehicle's range and EV chargers' locations play a crucial role in long-distance travel with electric vehicles. To facilitate better travel, more than 75,000 EV charging ports were deployed across the US in the past three years.  Furthermore, the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation launched the National Zero-Emission Freight Corridor Strategy a few months ago. It aims to advance the deployment of zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicle fueling infrastructure in alignment with EV charging corridors designated by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Any EV driver can use this open data to plan their long-distance travel. Recent news seems to consist of negative news about EV sales but doesn’t give any viable solutions to change this. So we will. 1. Re-introduce an electric car grant which helps reduce the high purchase price of EVs. Did you know up until 2022, a grant of up to £5000 could be used against the purchase price? 2. Cut public charging costs by reducing the VAT to 5%. Allowing people that can’t charge from home more affordable charging solution. 3. Invest in home charging solutions for people who do not have access to offstreet parking.
