Enclosed Space Entry is a recurring problem in the maritime industry. In case of emergency in enclosed spaces, TIME is very essential. The faster the response, the better the outcome. With the Enclosed Space Location Monitoring Sheet, the location of the person inside the space is being monitored with regular reporting. Additionally, it aids the enclosed space rescue by: - A drawing/ diagram of the enclosed space is readily available on site for rescue planning purposes - Last reported position of the person inside is marked, thus making rescue operations faster and efficient. Safety first. It is as simple as that. Seafaring is a high-risk occupation. But that can never be an excuse to relax on safety issues. Instead, it should push us to always strive for safer ships and ways of working. Today is the International Day of the Seafarer. The International Maritime Organization has chosen to focus on safety at sea as the theme for 2024, and we wholeheartedly support this theme. Safety is the most crucial aspect of our work. We won't transport your goods if it means a too high risk for our colleagues at sea. At Grieg Star, we live by the motto, 'Work with safety to come home safely.' This saying, which has been ours for close to ten years, underscores the crucial role of our seafarers in making our industry safer. They are not just employees, but the very heart of our safety efforts. Therefore, our seafarers' safety tips are integral to our work. Today is the International Maritime Organization's Day of the Seafarer. Celebrated annually on 25 June, Day of the Seafarer recognises the contribution seafarers make to international seaborne trade, the world economy, and our day-to-day lives. This year, we asked AMSA staff to show their appreciation for the work of seafarers and how their safety at sea is in the interest of all of us. Scott Cundy, who works in our Seafarer Certification team, started out crewing tall ships in Europe, and tourism and dive vessels in Israel and Seychelles. He has crossed the Atlantic 30 times and the Pacific 4 times — albeit under sail at an average speed of 5 knots. Scott says, "Seafarer safety is important, considering marine safety has more inherent elements of high risk than most professions.” "My best safety tip is to invest the time and effort in developing and maintaining a simple and effective safety management system (SMS). A good SMS will be simple to understand and easily implemented. I always ask myself: Does the SMS say what we do? And are we doing what the SMS tells us to do?" For 2024, the campaign emphasizes seafarers' contribution to maritime safety. Seafarers are crucial in ensuring the safety of ships and their crews. Their commitment to safety at sea involves utilizing the right gear, undergoing rigorous training, and adhering to stringent safety protocols. To mark this year’s Day of the Seafarer, the IMO is encouraging seafarers to share their best safety tips at sea. Seafarers are invited to post a picture of themselves in their working environment, showcasing how they maintain safety on board, using the hashtag #SafetyTipsAtSea on social media. Be creative and share how you contribute to maritime safety, whether through the equipment you use, the training you’ve received, or how you adapt to technological advancements and innovations to stay safe on board. The wider public is also invited to show their appreciation for the work of seafarers and acknowledge the importance of their safety at sea. #Being@Sea Being a seafarer at present owes an array of challenges including: 1) #security Threats due to current geo- political tensions in & around Red Sea & adjoining areas. 2) Peak #stress levels as a result of being away from family & loved ones amounting to absence of social gatherings & shore leaves. 3) #mentalhealth & physical fatigue endured due to an ever changing work scope & the consequential task demands. 4) Implementation of ever evolving #marine #Regulatory #Compliance measures resulting in heavy administrative work load & other legal & commercial liabilities. 5) #micromanagement of vessel operations by shore managemnt to meet personal goals in the name of company’s objectives & milestones. 6) Lack of suitable #communication provisions onboard to connect with the loved ones at a similar pace as experienced ashore. 7) #Non- #Unification of the wages of the seafarers resulting in reasonable disparity basis the nationality of an individual for the same set of duties & assigned tasks. 8) Lack of severe #learninganddevelopment initiative in the young seafarers & apprentices leading to several incidents & accidents. 9) Lack of #Recognition & #rewards by the shore management for the loyality, hard work & special achievements of the seafarers. All of the above visible attributes as identified are mangeble to bring in an improved #efficiency, #sustained results & #positive #productivity while managing a safe work onboard. This requires excercising a sound #leadership, #emotionalintelligence, #transparency in the shared ideas & frequent integration of shore management to seek #feedbacks for future growth opportunities for one & all. A robust engagement of the shore management & seafarers in sync with the Company’s objectives as laid down for the well being of the crew onboard can significantly resolve the above issues at no additional cost. Nevertheless, it is interim to recall that a happy #Seafarer is the backbone of today’s #supplychainmanagement who aids in meeting the #dynamics of the ancillary #commodities. Let’s get together to suppprt them in their #wellbeing.
