Last week, Counsul Kjell Erik Brekke participated in the Reuters Floating Wind conference in San Diego. Norwegian industry took part in insightful discussions about best practices and the most pressing challenges, together with governments, civil society, developers, port operators, and respective supply chains. California’s strong commitment to maintain its role as a global leader in the green transition was yet again clearly demonstrated. The first leases for floating offshore wind have already been auctioned (with Equinor as one of the winners). To meet the enormous needs of this new but rapidly growing industry in the Golden State, ports must invest massively in upgrades, new supply vessels must be designed and built together with so much else of the supply chain. Likewise, huge investments are foreseen in the grid and transmission systems, which will also support the broader electrification required for the green transition. And equally important, all stakeholders are consulted to secure a just and equitable transition for everyone. It is good to see Norwegian companies being involved in these developments from the beginning, paving the way with cross-cutting technology to boost safety, protect nature and workers, and bring down costs. Truly impressed and energized by the enthusiasm and optimism shared by so many to achieve California’s ambitious climate goals! Paul James Sørheim I Kelly E. Tonn Nua: Draft South Coast DMAP published! It’s great to see the draft South Coast Designated Maritime Area Plan (DMAP) published by Minister Ryan this morning, at the WEI Offshore Wind Conference. A site has been identified for the development of a 900MW offshore windfarm, via auction in the ORESS 2.1 process. There was an air of anticipation here in Dublin and the DMAP was broadly welcomed by the industry. It is seen as an important milestone to deliver the target of 5GW of offshore wind by 2030. Congratulations to my colleague Antonia Gaughran and the RPS Environmental team who undertook the Strategic Environmental Assessment of the DMAP. We’re delighted to have supported the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications (DECC) on the development of this DMAP, the first in a series to be developed. Well done also to Neasa Kane Fine and her Project Communications team, who are supporting DECC with the public consultation process. Overall, I’d say that there’s a positive, upbeat mood at this year’s Offshore Wind Conference, with industry body Wind Energy Ireland hosting an outstanding event. There’s plenty of visionary thinking, encompassing national energy independence and a net zero future, underpinned by an ambition to deliver 37GW of offshore wind by 2050. The near-term target of 5GW of installed capacity by 2030 has been subject to detailed discussion, with a focus on delivery. Over the coming months, the initial batch of Phase 1 projects will apply to An Board Pleanála (ABP) for planning permission. We heard much about how ABP has restructured and increased its resources, so the sector looks to have a fair wind at its back! #netzero #sustainability #windenergyireland #rps #tonnnua

Take a look at what's sailing in over the horizon. Edison Chouest Offshore's new ECO Edison is in route from the Gulf of Mexico to Rhode Island to support the Revolution Wind project being constructed by Ørsted and Eversource Energy. This vessel is the latest tangible sign of the offshore wind industry's investment in domestic shipbuilding and supply chains. Collectively, #offshorewind developers are investing in over 40 new U.S. flagged vessels, according to industry statistics. In light of Sen. Kelly and Rep. Waltz's recent Wall Street Journal op-ed on revitalizing the maritime industry, such investments--while a fraction of the total--are nonetheless meaningful in maintaining domestic capacity.

So amongst some great recent success stories, such as #Hornsea2 being recognised by the Guinness book of records (https://lnkd.in/eVjH8-QC), #Hornsea3 as the largest single windfarm in-waiting starting construction (https://lnkd.in/eRkPbAmD), wind generation in the UK achieving almost 22GW in December 2023 (https://lnkd.in/eM24iGJp), and the CO2 intensity of UK generation reaching an all-time low of 43g/kWh (https://lnkd.in/e47P-ae9), none of which is #bragawatts (https://lnkd.in/egCDvqAJ), it’s easy to miss some quiet yet significant milestones from more established assets. A good example is #WalneyExtension - the largest offshore windfarm in the world when commissioned in 2018; operated by the amazing women and men at the Orsted’s West Coast Hub in #Barrow-in-Furness; managed by the superb #ØrstedUKCoastal team; owned by #Ørsted, PKA, PFA and Octopus; and a windfarm which I am very familiar with: having lead the development team and been a director and chair of the board until late 2023 (shttps://lnkd.in/egS2PbnR). Walney Extension is still amongst the 10 largest offshore windfarms in the world*; still the only UK offshore windfarm with turbines from two different OEMs; and still the best near-shore performer from a capacity factor and availability measure in the world (well, half of the turbines at least). And last month, the meters at #WalneyExtension ticked over to #15TWh cumulative production, confirming its status as one of the most productive offshore windarms in Orsted’s fleet, and just about to overhaul its progenitor namesake, #Walney in overall production. #Ørsted #Offshorewind #catchusifyoucan

🇺🇸 There are significant challenges for the U.S. West Coast before we can advance to floating wind deployment on a larger scale. To build 3 GW by 2030 in Oregon and 25 GW by 2045 in California and realize the floating wind potential in this region, we require upgrades to the existing ports and infrastructure to handle major components and scale up sustainably. Lessons from previous projects, particularly those from the East Coast, can inform future investments and propel the industry forward with ambitious yet achievable targets. How can we leverage experience in supply chain development to deliver these targets on time and within budget? Join Principle Power’s Vice President of Technology, Seth Price, P.E. at the Floating OSW Port & Vessel Summit organized by Oceantic Network. The panel will bring together experienced OEMs, EPCs, and technology providers for an exciting discussion on "Supplier Perspectives: Laying the Foundations for a Robust West Coast Supply Chain." Gavin & Doherty Geosolutions (GDG) welcomes the government's release of the 'Powering Prosperity—Ireland's Offshore Wind Industrial Strategy.' This forward-thinking initiative provides a solid basis for sustainable transformation, not just in clean energy production but also in industrial growth and job creation. It was positive to see the Governments industrial strategy highlight, through a case study, the significant work being done by the Venterra Group T&I team in the conceptual development of an innovative floating wind anchoring system which has the potential to significantly reduce development time and costs for floating offshore wind farms which may be used off Irelands West coast. The IDA Ireland backing has been instrumental for GDG, enabling initial feasibility assessments, planning for concept designs, and scoping for future testing and pilot programs ahead of potential market introduction. GDG's commitment to investing in and supporting the development of the Irish supply chain is bolstered by such support from state agencies like the IDA Ireland.
