USAF re-optomization Taiwan “The PLA operational concept of system destruction warfare, which seeks to paralyze the enabling capabilities of an adversary force. Accordingly, the PLA constantly assesses USAF operational readiness for weaknesses to exploit. US force generation just prior to the start of a conflict would likely be struck by massive cyber-attacks from the PLA Strategic Support Force (PLASSF) to deny communications, spread disinformation, and hack logistics system. The USAF has now proposed a new ‘unit of action’ configuration, the combat wing. The combat wings will train extensively with multiple capabilities and be prepared to rapidly deploy, even when communications are badly disrupted. They will have their own native command-and-control, mission, and support elements. By pre-building cohesive units trained to the mission, the effects of a PLA paralysis attack on force generation can be mitigated.”

NATO’s current approach to air and missile defense prioritizes domestic politics and economic interests over allied cooperation and interoperability. The allies can do more to integrate their air defenses into a stronger, collective architecture.

Admiral Lee Hsi-ming,Taiwan’s former Chief of the General Staff, who developed and now advocates for the “overall defense concept (ODC),” said Taiwan needs a methodical change “that can guide the force structure, weapons acquisition, doctrine development, joint operational plan, joint training, logistics support” of Taiwan’s military.. ODC emphasizes deterrence by denial, calls for weapons that have high survivability, high precision, and low cost, in addition to force mobility and command and control system redundancy. … Taiwan should adopt the philosophy of “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. … Chinese threat Concerning when China could potentially launch an invasion of Taiwan, Lee pointed to statements from U.S. officials, who have said 2027 would be the year the People’s Liberation Army would likely have full invasion capabilities. However, China currently has insufficient amphibious lift and lacks joint operations experience, including weapons, tactics, doctrine, logistics, and equipment, Lee said. Even after gaining the ability, Beijing would still have to conduct massive air bombardments and missile strikes to neutralize Taiwan’s military assets, installations, and command posts.. ….”

Astral Knight 24 to exercise U.S. EUCOM’s Integrated Air and Missile Defense Joint Multi-domain Multinational Operations with STITCHES for Interoperability Mission Integration Cybersecurity A Multi-national military exercise, called Astral Knight 2024, kicked off Monday, in Europe. It is focused on exercising Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) and the incremental development of theater-wide security capabilities The exercise, slated to run through May 18, is U.S. European Command’s capstone IAMD exercise and falls under the Department of Defense’s broader exercise program called Large Scale Global Exercise 2024. AK24 is scheduled to host nearly 5,000 Allied personnel from six participating Allied nations and more than 50 aircraft. Four Allied nations will provide aircraft for the exercise: Lithuania, Poland, the U.K. and the U.S. Other participating nations include Denmark and Greece, which will observe elements of the exercise, advancing Allied interoperability throughout the Baltic regions. "Astral Knight demonstrates the collective defense capabilities of NATO Allies and partners across Europe," said Gen. James Hecker, U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa and NATO Allied Air Command commander. “By fostering early collaboration and integration in air and missile defense efforts among USAFE-AFAFRICA and NATO nations, we enhance our ability to deter and respond effectively to shared threats.” USAFE-AFAFRICA has invested in advanced sensors, radars, and surveillance technologies, and integrated them with Allies and partners to develop a comprehensive and accurate common situational awareness picture. Such capabilities allow for effective detection, tracking and identification of potentially hostile airborne and missile threats. Collaboration with NATO Allies, as in AK24, strengthens collective defense capabilities across the European theater and allow the U.S. and Allies to test command and control relationships. On top of safeguarding NATO sovereignty, IAMD involves a coordinated approach to protect Allied military forces and critical assets from air and missile attacks, ensuring they can operate freely, without disruption and impediment from enemy air and missile strikes USAFE-AFAFRICA has enhanced IAMD systems by incorporating offensive and defensive measures across multiple components to create a comprehensive Allied force, capable of preventing an enemy from successfully employing offensive air and missile weapons to attack NATO sovereignty The final layer of IAMD is Air Base Air Defense (ABAD), which recognizes the importance of protecting Allied bases from attacks. The defense of main operating bases, such as Ramstein Air Base, requires officials to consider and be prepared to defend against evolving capabilities including the proliferation of cruise missiles and drones

Boeing Defense, Space & Security Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) seeker program, which builds the component that enables the most advanced interceptors used by the Patriot system to identify, track and intercept fast-moving threats, is off to a record-setting start in 2024. The program surpassed its previous three- and six-month rolling PAC-3 seeker production records, and is also on pace to break its annual seeker production record by over 20% by year-end. “The PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement — equipped with a Boeing seeker — saves lives,” said Jim Bryan, director of Integrated Air & Missile Defence. “U.S. and allied service members and civilians rely on what our teammates build and deliver, so we’re ramping up production to provide more protection in more places to help meet the need for this capability.” PAC-3 seekers provide the most advanced interceptors used by the Patriot system with precision target location data to defeat everything from incoming ballistic and cruise missiles to hostile aircraft and other advanced weapons.
