Big Red 🤝 GA-ASI on initial integration of air-to-air weapons aboard the Collaborative Combat Aircraft. Someday -- and we hope that day never comes -- but it's our job to be ready if it does -- deterrence might fail. U.S. and allied air crews might have to confront adversaries and take direct action. It might be necessary to make the hostile aircraft go away. CCA not only sees the adversary first, alerts the allied air component early, and helps the good guys assess the best action to take. It can, if necessary, when ordered by a human commander, release the first shot, too. The early stages of preparing all those systems already are underway. 👇

I believe that any discussion about UK Combat Air should use the 2018 Combat Air Strategy as a start point. To make it relevant you then test each element of the National Value Framework against events and experience subsequent to 2018. I suggest this approach leads to the deduction that the strategy is even more relevant today than it was in 2018. Add to this the political direction to deliver a NATO First Defence policy as part of the Strategic Defence Review, and the scene is set for the timely and critical debate being hosted by the Freeman Air and Space Institute debate on 13 September. Ahead of ILA Berlin - Pioneering Aerospace that starts next week, we're spotlighting the NH90 Sea Tiger on order by the German Navy. The MRFH (Multi-Role Frigate Helicopter) Sea Tiger was developed specifically to meet the needs of the German Navy with a mission system focused on anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare.  On the path to entry into service in 2025, an important step has just been taken with a successful eight-week test campaign that took place from February to April 2024. All eyes are now on Nordholz. From June to mid-August, a Sea Tiger will be deployed from the Nordholz base in a full demonstration of its operational capabilities, - the last major qualification step before deliveries begin in 2025. The aircraft, still operated by Airbus Helicopters, will follow an operational flight profile from A to Z, with sonar activity and simulated torpedo and missile firings. This type of test has never before been carried out on a helicopter. The AW159 Wildcat represents the next generation of the Super Lynx, boasting an increased All-Up Weight (AUW) and a design that embodies its formidable role as a naval helicopter. Its aesthetic alone commands respect, fitting neatly into the broader category of naval force multiplier that can be described as "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly"—each aspect contributing to its distinct operational identity. However, it is noteworthy that the Royal Navy has opted not to equip the Wildcat with a dipping sonar, suggesting a deliberate focus on ASuW capabilities over ASW. This decision could be seen as a strategic limitation, especially considering that the Wildcat's intended primary weapon, the Sea Venom anti-ship missile, has yet to enter full operational service. Meanwhile, other navies, such as the ROKN and the PN, have opted for the SPIKE-ER, an Israeli-made anti-ship missile, as a viable alternative. This raises questions about the maturity and readiness of the Wildcat's ASuW role, particularly in an evolving maritime threat environment where versatility and adaptability are crucial.
