Let me tell you a story about Maya, a DEIJ coordinator passionate about making a real difference in her workplace. She noticed something unsettling: despite good intentions, their DEIJ initiatives were missing the mark. They were overlooking the complex layers of identity that make each person's experience unique—what's known as intersectionality. Determined to shift this narrative, Maya embarked on a three-step mission: Educate, Listen, and Review. She organized workshops to unwrap the concept of intersectionality, highlighting the intertwined nature of our identities. Then, she established open forums, safe havens where everyone's stories, especially those often unheard, could be shared and valued. Finally, she scrutinized company policies through an intersectional lens, ensuring they catered to everyone, especially the most marginalized. The outcome? A workplace that truly understands and embraces the full spectrum of human diversity, creating a more inclusive, supportive environment for all. Happy Monday to you! I hope you are having a delightful start to your week. We are well into December, and I am happy to wake up to see another day. Over the weekend, I review the week to prepare for the next week. About three years ago, I created a process called St/Ops, in which I keep track of my strengths and the usage of my strengths for my developmental opportunities. More importantly, I keep track of the activities that create more inclusion. Most often, it is riding in a random Uber and sharing what I do for a living or even getting on a webinar and people being excited about the business that I have created. It is remarkable that when we put inclusion at the forefront, it opens the door for connection. I even reminded a gentleman yes, inclusion, includes you too! (as noted on the IOTS website www.incslopes.com):) Even if this was not my business, I would continue to share my story, for inclusion is too good not to share. Have a wonderful week! April is Celebrate Diversity Month and Edelstein’s IDEA Council will be recognizing this through weekly trivia questions. The answer to last week's question was, B) Providing fair treatment, access, opportunity, and advancement for all individuals, while striving to identify and eliminate barriers that have prevented the full participation of some groups. This week's question is, What does the term "belonging" signify in the context of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB)? A) Fostering an environment where individuals feel accepted and valued for their unique identities and contributions, promoting a sense of community and acceptance. B) Ensuring that all individuals are treated equally and have access to the same resources and opportunities, regardless of their background or identity. C) Creating spaces where marginalized groups are given preferential treatment to compensate for historical injustices and disparities. *Embracing our Diversity* Yesterday on the central day of Pride Month, I had the opportunity to share and reflect on fundamental concepts such as intersectionality, power and privilege in the Lima office. It is important to mention that during the last four weeks, the Pride+ BRG has been able to deploy all the hard-planned virtual and hybrid events to continue consolidating inclusive and safe spaces, thus demonstrating our commitment to diversity here at #ThermoFisherScientific In the time I had in the morning we talked about: intersectionality, power and privilege, since as Marcelo Baudino says, "we cannot really get involved without first having recognized our privileges". And it is from our professional sphere, where we spend most of our time every day, where we can/should also be *agents of change* and take advantage of these spaces to learn and relearn. "Intersectionality" helps us realize that each human being is the sum of many factors that define our identity, a way of looking at our realities and how they affect each person differently. Talking about "privilege", being such a personal and broad topic, can be summarized as something "you haven't had to go through" rather than something you have gone through or had. The "Power/Privilege Wheel" (by Sylvia Duckworth's) helped me visualize and reflect on how our life experiences may differ from others. Talking about these topics, although uncomfortable at first, is crucial for our personal and professional evolution. Yesterday again we managed to raise awareness and celebrate that above all: we are human beings, colors can vary... #ProudToBePart #PrideMonth2024 An special thank you María Polo Capuñay for the valuable conversation that reinforced these concepts!
