Today, I had the privilege of attending KML's Top 30 Under 30 Summit. Thank you The Westin Harbour Castle, Toronto and Sam for giving me and my colleagues this opportunity. And congratulations to Aaron for the well-deserved award! We're so proud of you! 🎉 I arrived already expecting to learn, but the panel sessions far exceeded my expectations. I'm excited to share my key takeaways: 📝"Diversity" extends beyond race, age, and gender orientation to include learning abilities. Most people who work in FOH are experiential learners, retaining information better through hands-on experience. Training should be tailored accordingly, rather than relying solely on PowerPoint slides or written materials. 📝Encourage every associate to collaborate and contribute to changes; give them a sense of purpose. 📝When hiring, shift the focus from "Will they stay?" to "How do we retain them?"; what we should be looking for, especially in the service industry, is Authenticity. 📝Going Green— This shouldn't mean taking away amenities or putting the burden on the guests in any way, it means offering an alternative. 📝Pre-Shifts— the hallmark of service excellence; setting the mood for associates and keeping them informed impacts guest's experiences more than you think.
So excited to be at the KML Top 30 - Under - 30 Summit with members of The Westin Harbour Castle, celebrating our award winner Aaron Foster! Congratulations to all 30 Next Gen Trailblazers and to the various panel members for sharing their invaluable insights into a variety of timely topics!

Whether through an election or a proposed slate, bringing the right leaders into the board room is crucial to the success of your club. Having the proper board culture focuses these leaders to excel in their service to the Club. #boardsgettingbetteratgettingbetter #theclubcouncil #privateclubgovernance
How does your club ensure the right members get into the boardroom? While committees serve as the best audition for board service, we recognize that even skilled committee members may face challenges as a director. The primary issue often stems from their inability to grasp the club’s strategic issues. To counteract this, we recommend thorough board orientations, ongoing education initiatives, and rigorous nominating processes. Can we help your club? A board retreat focused on best practices can serve as the catalyst of favorable change. Kirk Reese

Chances are, you may not have thought about Age Discrimination..? I hadn't either until recently, it seems the older I get, the more I become aware of my own unconscious biases towards getting older. This was my first time chairing our DEI group, and I really want to drive actions from conversation, so here are my take aways... One of the many things we discussed was how people (particularly younger people!) are less likely to recruit older people. For me, I certainly recognised this in myself when I recruited for a role in my 20s. Upon reflection, I think I felt threatened and wouldn't know how to manage/lead someone with more experience. My own insecurities could have got in the way of someone else's opportunity. I've been doing some self-reflection, and have so far committed to the below as a starting point: 1. Stop looking at the education section of CVs to gauge how old a candidate is...age is not an indication of maturity Catherine! 🤦🏽♀️ 2. If I find myself interviewing someone older than me, don't be threatened by it. Different experiences make strong teams (you should know this by now Catherine!)💪🏽 3. Be age inclusive: recruit from all age groups, create an environment for shared learning, plus identity and support issues specific to older workers 👌🏽 4. Use age inclusive language: older and younger. No need for anything else 🗣 Thank you again to everyone involved! I'm already looking forward to the next 🙌🏽 #OneChange AEV Association of Event Venues Ltd AEO Association of Event Organisers ESSA
