NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration’s Post

Heading to the movies this weekend? If you’re planning on seeing the new 🌪️#TwistersMovie 🌪️, keep an eye out for NOAA! (Yes, we make some cameo appearances!) And check out our new page, noaa.gov/twisters to find out: What’s it like to be an actual storm chaser? Can a tornado really catch fire? Are twin tornadoes possible? Is it possible to “tame a tornado”? Who actually studies these storms? (We’ll give you a hint for that last one… we do!) Pictured: Characters from the movie Twisters marvel at the awesome power of violent tornadoes as they strike across Oklahoma in a promotional poster for the movie. It was awesome seeing NOAA represented in the movie! I mentioned to my son-in-law that it was one of my favorite assignments before I retired in 2018. The premiere science administration for weather! Go NOAA!!!

NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration I went to see it last week and I thought it was a great movie! The CGI graphics and visual effects of the tornados were incredibly realistic and I loved the geekiness of the characters' personalities; getting excited over their discoveries and the passion they have for their interests and fields. I also love the multiple themes and undertones/messages that are hidden and not explicitly stated in the movie, but instead are implied through dialogue, symbols, objects, and actions. My meteorologist twin brother Christopher Zacharko (who is still trying to land his first job in the field; please hire him NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration of Mount Holly, NJ!!!) was explaining to me after the movie the various accurate (and inaccurate) meteorological facts, terms, weather moments/events/occurrences, and science/math that were stated or shown, and also when real-life locations, agencies, photos, and video were used too. It was really fun to see the movie with a meteorologist and, in real time, see his gestures and reactions to the accuracies, inaccuracies, and actions (both good and bad/stupid) that characters take or do in the movie. He loved the film! #Twisters
