’Beijing’s investment in Mexico is increasingly concentrated in high-value manufacturing, with Chinese companies moving production from their home base to Mexico to take advantage of that country’s privileged trade access to the North American market. Brazil won by far the biggest share of Chinese FDI in the region over the two decades to 2022, with $78.6bn or 42 per cent of the total. Peru was the second biggest recipient, followed by Mexico, Argentina and Chile. “Our data show a clear shift in Chinese FDI towards specific industries in Latin America and the Caribbean,” said Margaret Myers, a co-author of the report by the Washington-based think-tank Inter-American Dialogue. “Many of these new priority areas are described by China as ‘new infrastructure’, a term which encompasses industries — telecommunications, fintech and energy transition, for instance — which are . . . critical to China’s own economic growth strategy.” https://lnkd.in/eq4SYbGV

THE HEART OF THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF SOUTH AMERICA One of the challenges for South American economies is the lack of more economical trade routes with Asia-Pacific countries, specially, China, India, Japan, Australia and others. This is going to change. Within 5 years, the Republic of Peru is going to be the heart of the continent as it will be the hub for the development and expansion of their economies. A new direct route between South America and the Asia Pacific regions will be created; and distances to access a port to directly ship their goods to the Asia-Pacific region will be reduced to less than 3,000 km (traditional port of transfer is 11,000 km north). Brazil, the largest economy in South America will no longer need to use the african, Panama, or the Strait of Magellan) routes which are becoming more expensive. What this means? A more commercially viable and competitive market will be opening for South America. Up until today, Asian nations and Australia looked at South America as a region too far and expensive to trade. Transit shipping time is about 45 to 60 days. South American economies found better viable trade with North America and Europe because Asia and Australia was too far and shipping cost are less competitive. In 2025, this will change. In November of 2024, Peru will open the port of Chancay, it will be able to handle some of the largest shipping containers in the world (18,000 to 20,000). No other port in South America have this infrastructure. Also, a second port (the port of Corio) with a capacity to handle 24,000 to 26,000 containers will be built, and operational within 5 years; these ports, will use 5G cloud computing, AI technology, and robots, making them the most intelligent, eco-friendly, and efficient ports, including driverless vehicles. Normal times to plan the port logistics for a vessel takes more than 20 hours of manual planning; whereas, with this technology it will take 10 minutes of intelligent planning. Also, this type of operations will increase the port's labor force safety as the unloading and transportation within the port will be fully automated. New businesses and skilled personnel will be needed in logistics, engineering, education, transport, communication, maintenance, and others. The AMLO administration’s energy nationalism have had a negative impact on energy security in the country, thus further deterring investment with companies wary of locating their factories in a country that cannot guarantee access to clean and reliable energy. Another critical element is AMLO’s approach to security and the rule of law, encompassed by the phrase “hugs, not bullets.” Lack of investment in Mexico’s infrastructure under the guise of republican austerity has left the country vulnerable to significant challenges.
