The Department of Entrepreneurship and the John W. Altman Institute for Entrepreneurship in the Miami University Farmer School of Business are excited to welcome Mike Venerable as a new Instructor of Entrepreneurship. Mike will teach ESP 481, the department's Technology Commercialization course in which students evaluate emerging IP and develop commercialization plans for products and technologies that faculty and researchers at Miami University are developing in laboratories and research facilities across campus. Mike has more than three decades of technology commercialization, venture capital investment, and startup experience. He cofounded CincyTech, a Cincinnati-based venture capital firm that specializes in technology transfer and commercialization that invests in early stage companies operating in the information technology, healthcare, and SaaS. big data, B2B payments, infrastructure, life sciences, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cybersecurity, e-commerce, industrials, impact investing, and technology-based sectors across Midwest and Ohio, and served as CEO for six years before stepping down earlier this month. Under Mike's leadership, CincyTech, which has almost $100 million in assets under management (AUM), funded startups that commercialized technologies from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, UC Health, and Cleveland Clinic, among many other life sciences companies. In addition to his previous role as CEO with CincyTech, Mike serves as a Member of the Board of Directors at ActionStreamer, IncludeHealth, Losant, NEOVIEW, and Clarigent Health. He not only brings a deep understanding of the lean startup methodology, but has extensive experience evaluating new technologies for investment opportunities, advising startup companies on the commercialization of those technologies in the market, and helping those companies prepare to receive venture capital. Previously, Mike co-founded and served as CEO at Talus, a leading data warehouse consultancy, which was acquired by Sagent Technology. Following the acquisition, Mike led the company's services organization through the company's successful IPO in 1999. He has specific experience in raising angel and venture capital, software business design and operation, software product management, business valuation, financial analysis, and intellectual property. As an industry practitioner, he is an expert on data warehouse design, business intelligence and analytic applications, and software development processes. He has consulted with a variety of large organizations and software companies on product development and strategy. Additionally, she is the Director and board member of the International Social Capital Association and the founder of the 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝘆 in South Africa. Dr. Felix-Faure is a passionate advocate for inclusive and transformative entrepreneurship. She emphasizes the importance of entrepreneurship education in empowering youth, fostering skills such as decision-making, leadership, and networking. Her research focuses on inclusive, sustainable, and transformational entrepreneurship, exploring the impact of institutional settings on entrepreneurial behavior. This includes examining social mechanisms within specific contexts and their influence on cultural imprinting. Dr. Felix-Faure's latest initiative, born from her PhD research, is the 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝘆. This community-based organization in South Africa aims to develop scientifically informed entrepreneurship educational models and tools to foster inclusive and sustainable entrepreneurship. The academy collaborates with local government and private organizations to provide business incubation programs. In addition to her academic and research roles, Dr. Felix-Faure is the founder of iTU Espace Design, an interior and fashion concept store, and 𝗧𝗲𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿, a café. She has extensive experience in international sales, distribution, import/export, and retail, with a strong interest in improving people's quality of life. Leveraging Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Certificate Achievement I am thrilled to announce the successful completion of the "Innovation & Entrepreneurship – From Design Thinking to Funding" certificate program offered by Coursera. This comprehensive program provided a valuable framework for fostering innovative ideas, translating them into viable business models, and securing the necessary funding for successful ventures. Throughout the program, I delved into the principles of design thinking, a human-centered approach to problem-solving. This methodology equips me with the ability to identify unmet needs, generate creative solutions, and prototype these solutions with real-world users. The program further strengthened my expertise in business modeling, enabling me to construct robust financial plans and articulate the value proposition of innovative products and services. One of the program's most valuable aspects was the exploration of funding strategies. I gained a comprehensive understanding of securing financial resources, from crafting compelling investment pitches to navigating the intricacies of venture capital and angel investing. This knowledge empowers me to confidently present innovative ideas to potential investors and secure the resources necessary to bring them to fruition. The most #Efficient Universities in Europe for entrepreneurship, conducted by Redstone. (see comments for the full report).   I am super excited that Frankfurt School of Finance & Management is in the top 30 within only one year of operation (the survey was conducted for 2023, and we launched the entrepreneurship centre in mid-2022). In the next few years we aim to be in the Top 10. 🚀   At Frankfurt School Entrepreneurship Centre we are certainly Lean & Mean = efficiency. We are a team of three full-timers and two part-time working students. In just two years, we have supported over 100 startups of which about 50% raised a combined EUR 13 million in venture funding. That is what I would call Lean & Mean. To achieve this, we work hard in delivering various activities: 🌊 Constantly enriching our community with relevant people many of whom are FS Alumni in the space of venture capital, entrepreneurship or any relevant industry. We have only scratched the surface as FS boasts an alumni community of 50k individuals. 🌊 Bi-yearly “co-founder wanted events” to create opportunities for founders to meet. Twice a year we host dozens of students from technical universities such as RWTH Aachen University, CODE University of Applied Sciences, hessian.AI and Technische Universität Darmstadt. Both programs consist of highly relevant content to get the startups in the right direction towards product-market fit. 🌊 Bi-yearly Demo Days. We are all #colleagues after all, striving to foster the startup ecosystem in #Germany.   The reason I feel this is important is because I have been advocating for years that “Lean & Mean” is the way to go. Entrepreneurs certainly would know what I mean. Very often I see huge budgets being poured into building infrastructure and programs for startups. I strongly believe that those budgets would be much better spent if they’d go directly towards founders instead towards infrastructure with high fixed operational costs.
